Myself I compare mine to a 243 we have. Can’t tell the difference. No matter what caliber you go with get a lead sled for them to target practice with. Make it as comfortable as you can for them while learning
I have a compass I bought 2 years ago and I really like it. Hard to beat for the money. It’s a little on the heavy side but can’t be too picky at that price point
I bought my grandson a Remington 6.5 Crd. with a wooden stock and its a keeper . It has very little recoil and shoots great.
Yes it is loud, but I wouldn't say any louder than other rifles. My grandson always wears hearing protection when he practices . I don't know how close you are to me but if you would like to shoot it no problem !
223 is a great round...and kills a pile of deer, but it’s not the round you really need to use for big game. Like mentioned earlier..no blood trail.. not a lot of knockdown power.. especially if the shot happens to b marginal. I started my kiddo out w a 223... and it did get the job done...but I saw that it could have been a bad situation..we just got lucky
Bought my son a 308 Mossberg last week. It kicks like a mule and will bruise your shoulder if you shoot it 6 times. Thinking of scaling down to smaller grain bullets but can't find them.
Bought the Marlin x7 a few years back in .243 it's a tack driver, love the trigger and no worries of loosing or forgetting mag. Absolutely love the gun. Like it slightly less for a young hunter due to internal mag. Being able to fully clear the gun with detachable mag of say the savage axis is added security. Bought my son the axis (not axis 2) this did not have the new adjustable trigger. And the factory trigger of the old axis left some to be desired. If I were to do it over I would have gotten him one with new trigger system. Or just two Marlin's. On the NEF breakbarrel it was always a struggle between the hammer, the scope, and my thumb.
So I believe I have decided to go with a 243. Now looking for opinions on which brand to buy. Also a good scope that won’t break the bank.
