Woodies

Any body build/shot wood arrows? If so lets see ‘em. I’m not the superstitious but I’m most likely sticking with woodies after the luck i had with my buck during the opening week. So its got me thinking about investing and building some more. I use to shoot them when i started out years ago but fazed out and into carbons Reverted this year for the first time in 8 seasons and loved shooting them over the summer. So I’m just curious on everyone’s input on the wood arrow subject.

They shoot awful in my crossguns...
But I've built a few sets for my longbows and played around with them. They shoot better than I can, I believe, but they require A LOT of TLC. I'm sure I'll revisit them when my kids are older and I have more time. There's just something cool about killing a deer with a cedar shaft built from the blank. I've shot 4 deer with them, and they all broke, even after pass thrus, FWIW. I'd like to try bamboo, I think @Carpdaddy has.

yeah that buck i shot this year was the first woody that didnt break but it was a hard quartering away shot so most of it was in the deer he didnt go far. Your right though there is something about em. I’ve had good luck with Doug fir but would also like to try the bamboo my self.

I have bought wood arrows and finished them. Built Bamboo arrows, River cane, and even cut limbs from brush and made them. Probably have a few laying around here and there. But then I got old, sickly, and lazy, using carbon recently.
Ill see if I can dig up some old pictures of past creations.

Im like Carp, ( did i really say that?) for years it was nothing but wood, seemed sacrilage to shoot anything else, made them from port orford, ash, poplar, even made them from hardwood dowells from Lowes. I too stripped turkey and goose feathers.
They are neat, its just a lot of work. It also seemed like they tended to lose spine after you shot them a while. I always used a back quiver back then too. Id hate to lean my bow up against a tree with woodies for fear of bending them.
Killing something with a woodie is more satisfying, but losing or breaking one is like the loss of a child because of all the work of spining, weighing, straightening, staining, sealing, fletching, when all you do is assemble carbons. Carbons never get crooked, and are hard to break.
Its just depends how much effort you want to put in them.

like i said i use to build wood arrows years ago and fell into carbons because of the durability and effortlessness of running them. But the call of the wood arrow brought me back full circle. But man they are a pain in the butt. @grinder said it right its like loosing a child when they go down. I wish i could put my finger on what about them that make them such a blast to shoot but can’t figure it out. To save my self the headache i believe im just going to order 100 surewood shafts that are pre tapered nock, point and tail and get my self a feather burner just to eliminate some of the hassle.

We had trouble with the humidity in our house swinging, we didn’t have AC and heated with wood. It was hard on bows and arrows. He went to aluminum before hanging up his recurve. I’m spoiled to carbon.
