That's a loaded question. However, if I lived in some horrible place where I could only have one of the three calibers you listed I would go with the .308 simply because of the availability of factory ammo and bullet selection, as well as, being able to get a short action/compact rig. With the numerous factory and reloading offerings I could use that gun on any deer in North America. With that being said I hunt with a .270, as well as, a 6mm Remington which shoots the same projectile as the .243. The bottom line is I would hate to only have one "deer rifle" in my arsenal.

I only have one rifle for gen gun season it is a .270win, but that doesn't mean I want it to be the only rifle I ever own for deer hunting.

I would pick the 308 for the short action. I hunt with a 30-06 and favor the 30 cal. Works well for the terrain of ky where you may have to make a poke or bust through some brush at 30 yards. The 308 is not much off the 06. And at some point you may want to carry your trusty deer gun on a bigger game hunt. I did killed my 320 elk in Idaho with it. The 270 would be a close second and do you fine also. I am not a big fan of small guns because every shot is not always perfect.

Personal preference. I hunt with a .270 I bought as a teenager. Now, if I had it to do over again, I'd choose a .308 but that's just for the versatility and not strictly deer hunting.

I like the shorter cartridges now. All are plenty big enough to kill any deer walking.

Really not a good ...direct ..answer but
I hunted with a 270 for close to 30 years , no doubt a deer getter but bullet selection sucks concerning versatility with various big game you may hunt other than deer. Which is why I hunt with the 30-06 now.... versatility out the butt concerning bullet selection. Which I'd give the edge with the choices given to the 308 from that perspective.

However if deer is all your hunting with the choices given..... Id probably opt personally for the 243. Plenty enough for whitetails, light recoil , accurate and excellent trajectory for long distances. Combine that with a proper 100 grain bullet.... it will put a bunch of deer in the dirt.

Put my biggest buck to date in the dirt today at 180 yards with a 243 and 100 grain core lokt. This makes 3 deer I have killed with this setup. All of them put together made it about 15 yards at most. The gun was sighted in at 100 yards dead on. The 180 yard shot today I held dead behind the shoulder and squeezed the trigger. At the crack of the gun I seen him hit the ground like a rock. I also shot a doe opening morning of rifle. She was facing dead at me I shot her in the neck at 50 yards and she went about 10 yards before crashing. Every deer I have shot with a 243 has not made it out of my sight.... But also I have killed 2 with a 270 that did the same. I also like the low recoil of 243 and less meat loss due to damage and blood shot....

I love my 243. It not only has the highest dollar and sentimental value of most of my collection. My .243 is a flat out contender in any scenario. Ive made ethical kill shots out to a TRUE 400 yards. Shoots m.o.a. all the way out to 400 and bullets are easy to find and it handles anything u put down the barrel. I have more expensive guns and flashy gadgets but i always reach to the front and grab this one for season

I love my 270. Flat shooter and will flat out kill deer. If it is a deer only gun the 270 gets my vote. Larger caliber a offer more versatility in case you go get a bear or elk.

I haven't hunted all gun season except with my son. I plan on hunting tomorrow. But today I was on coming home from Memphis to Cincy. I went way out of my way to go through Rockport Indiana just to grab my 270 for tomorrow.

I have other guns but wanted my 270 from my parents.
