Just got back from the family farm in Perkins Ga. Had a great time though i saw very few deer.. Typical of deer there after being shot at for so long. Enjoyed it just the same and actually did get some really good trail cam pics of some nice bucks. Heres one from several years back my dad harvested with his bow. Hes a Ga brute for sure.

Whatever! LOL. Most people in Georgia hunt an entire season and see the number of deer that I see in one trip. There are some good county's that practice QDM (Troup, Harris, Hancock, Macon, Dooley, etc.) But that's only a hand full. It's not the same thing. The long rifle season and the two buck limit kills Georgia's chances of catching up with Kentucky in the harvesting of mature bucks. I have a lifetime hunting licensee in Georgia and believe in their DNR but it ain't the Bluegrass.

On another note the little Georgia symbol with the GON in it makes me smile. Georgia Outdoor News is without a doubt my favorite hunting magazine. It puts all other state wide magazines to shame. The folks at GON do a great job. I wish we had a KON run by those same people. Gosh I miss reading that Magazine.

I agree with ya.. Theyre long gun season and 2 buck per year make Georgia a tough place to hunt this time of year. (Not to mention their use of dogs for deer hunting) From what ive experienced over the past 15 years just seeing a deer can be an accomplishment to be proud of late season.

Not that I'm a trophy hunter or wanting to push my style of hunting on anyone, but it is obvious that the states with more than one buck per year have very few big bucks taken. I'm making this statement based on numbers from the Boone and Crocket Club stats.

yes...there are two counties that has a 15" outside spread minimum restrictions. Those two counties are always ranked in the top 5 every year

The size of the bucks in GA have really increased over the past few years. From doing a little research I found that GA's deer population was 1.3 million in 2004, and I'm sure it's even larger today. Compared to Kentucky's 900,000+, gives yall a better chance for healthier deer and agriculture is more plentiful in yalls state. That's why I love coming to Kentucky!!! The thing that hurts GA the most our 2 buck limit, even though one must have 3 points or more on one side, and the 10 doe limit is a little stout since there are plenty of people that kill that many if not more every year. I wish the state would go to one buck. But management has played a huge part over the past few years. The bucks are getting bigger and better every year, development and the loss of farm land is hurting us though...too many deer that have no where to go.

Georgia also has some 4 point to one side counties. I do some of my hunting in one. I've been hunting there for a long time. Bruiser bucks are not common, but deer are and I have yet to be skunked in a lot of trips to see friends and family down there. I guess it matters who you know and where you go. I will be going down weekend after this to give it a try for this year.

I am NOT a fan of antler restrictions. They might temporarily bring a more advanced age structure, but the failure to eventually cull out bucks with sub-standard racks, and taking only the trophies means that sub-standard racks form your breeding pool with obvious results. The one buck rule is the only way to go.
