Update on CWD Issue

Hey guys. I appreciate some of you sharing our stories at Kentucky Outdoors Media. The KDFWR Commission meets tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 15) to finalize plans. They should know more from the Tennessee side of things by then.

One thing I think will be proposed is an expansion of firearm season at the end of October. It could be a way of getting ahead of things if CWD is found.

Here is my story on it -

Expansion of Firearm Season Could Help in Surveillance Zone Counties

Kind of surprised at the "fierce" opposition to baiting in those counties. I bait for deer, but I'd rather help the herd by not doing so, if CWD was a possibility in my areas. As for expansion of doe season into early October, I doubt that will result in a large number of does being taken. The overwhelming opinion is "the more does around during the rut, the better chance of bucks being around...." That's not my opinion, but that's the most prevalent mindset among hunters, IMO. Just my .02, and thanks for sharing.

I think a lot of folks oppose the ban of baiting in those areas because they believe it is a slippery slope and will lead to prohibiting baiting across the state. Some have said that, at least. It'll be interesting to see how it unfolds and how sportsmen in the area react. Thanks for reading and replying.

To be honest, I expect that to happen if CWD is found within the Commonwealth.........

There’s two sides to everything of course. I’m all for keeping cwd out. However, if spreading it is through saliva, blood, urineis the way it’s transmitted, I honestly don’t see how stopping baiting will help a whole lot. Can’t keep deer from using licking branches, eating under the same oaks that are dropping acorns, apples under a apple tree, etc. just my opinion. But if it helps, I’m not against a bait ban at all.

I think baiting does nothing to stop the spread. Deer are constantly liking each other like a momma cat. They groom each other and eat in the same areas naturally.

Now… I can stop baiting as I never did it back in the day. The problem now, is the Billy Bob next door does and probably will continue ban or no ban. Now I’m left at a disadvantage.

I started deer hunting in the early 70s and no one fed corn that I
hunted around. We all killed deer and never threw a kernel of corn out.
CWD would be bad for the deer herd and there would be no need for them to
suffer through that. Why as hunters would we want to cause a spread of CWD
by baiting, when we all could just stop.
The whitetail deer has been a staple to Ky and a great sport for all of us
for many years....
I would have no problem stopping baiting.

I bait a lot really more for pictures than anything. Can’t imagine baiting is going to continue. I will miss it from the picture standpoint. Was always like Xmas checking the cards.

Not being able to feed in the front yard, my wife will be pissed. She doesn't hunt but likes to see em in the mornings as she gets ready for work. Guess I'll need to change my signs from "this baitpile is for Deer only, all racoons, squirrels or turkeys will be shot on sight!" lol

Same with my wife. I'll have to modify one of her bird feeders to drop shell corn lol
