Hey guys I know this is last minute but I was just made aware of this forum so figured I’d give it a shot. I’m heading tomorrow to unit 4 so any tips or suggestions on public land or anyone that would allow me to hunt private would be appreciated. I’ve met with a guy from that area to scout out the land on flint ridge coal mine in Jackson to hunt a couple spots in that area to start. Thanks in advance
Got it done on public land in unit 4 yesterday afternoon! Not sure I’ll be getting much meat outta that front shoulder but so thankful for the experience and the harvest!
To be honest I was feeling a little hopeless after talking to locals regarding sightings in the area and realizing the public land in unit 4 was very minimal compare to what it used to be. I walked for miles not seeing much sign that first morning. I went for a quick lunch break and switched spots in afternoon. I was walking down an old mining road and noticed an opening to my right. As I was walking toward the opening I noticed something move in the thick brush to my left. She popped out at about 80 yards away and the 338 put her down. Crazy how it all comes together when you least expect it. Maybe the only chance I get to hunt Ky elk so I was thrilled to say the least.
I was concerned about that too and had everything ready to go to quarter it if needed. However, I got lucky and killed it about 100 yards from one of the old mining roads. Drug it down and somehow heaved it in the back of the truck.
