My earliest UK memories are hearing Cawood calling games on tbd radio and hearing “Macy” referring to Kyle Macy. I was on a date once in Lexington at a nice restaurant. We were seated and I was just looking around at the other couples. I was surprised to see Travis Ford and the young lady he was with sitting at the table next to ours. Not sure what came over me, but I asked for his autograph. He was very nice about it.

Travis was married to the daughter of a very wealthy man in BG. He wasn’t working for a while so his FIL had him deliver pizzas for his chain, Hungry Howies. Lol. He delivered a pizza to me more than once. He got caught with his pants down in their house and soon left BG.

That’s what we did. Even when we could actually get the game on TV (we had an antenna on the ridge). Continued to do that when mom and dad bought a satellite. That was like 82 or 83. Talk about culture shock. Went from usually no TV to 100s of channels. It was one of the big satellites not the small dish stuff.

Going from 3 fuzzy channels to satellite, we didn’t know how to act.
It was unreal. I remember that the remote was a metal box that had a long cord attached. On a basketball related note, I was watching a UK game on ESPN and John Pelphrey was playing. I went to high school with him at Paintsville High School. In those days, satellite had no commercials, so when there was a break, you could still see the arena and hear the announcers talking. Dick Vitale was talking about the high school rivalry between Paintsville and Johnson Central. I thought that was pretty cool.

I can’t remember if they played against each other in the Sweet 16 or not. I’d have to look it up. It’s about 2 hours from Paintsville to Maysville.
I’ve got a wild Maysville story when I drove across the entire state from Mayfield to Maysville to deliver a part to a big electric plant there 30 years ago when I have time to type a few paragraphs. Let’s just say we stopped off at a bar downtown on way back that looked fairly empty, we didn’t see all of the Harley’s out back lol.

In the early 2000s I wrote articles for a now defunct college basketball website covering OVC basketball. Kyle was coaching Morehead and when I got my first chance to talk to him I told him how much he meant to my grandfather who was a huge fan and the man almost seemed embarrassed by it. “Thank you for the kind words, that was a long time ago.” He spent several minutes talking to me. Humble as pie.

Travis Ford is another one who is very approachable and humble believe it or not, spoke with him a couple times during his tenure at EKU. Average Joe.

I was walking across campus at UK back in '78 with a friend who knew the gal that Macy happened to be with as we met them on the sidewalk. They started talking and Macy reached out his hand and said, "Hi, I'm Kyle." To me he was a UK Legend and he was one of the nicest most humble guys you'd ever want to meet.

Macy was too nice as a college coach if you can believe that. He hired Wayne Breeden as an assistant and he kind of ran the show as far as team camps, player discipline, etc…He could be a real d*ck! Which was perfect since Kyle was so nice.
