Training a new dog

  1. Best resource any of you have used for training? I’ve got my eye on a few different things, just curious what everyone has used and recommends. No offense to the trainers on the forum, being a public servant doesn’t allow the funds.

Don’t overlook podcasts. There’s lots of good information out there. Training books can usually be had for less than $10.

  3. I listen to a lot of podcasts, I haven’t found one dedicated to gun dog training. Any recommendations would be appreciated

First couple chapters of “water dog” is still the holy grail. I personally liked 10 min retriever. Pics of the mutt?

If you're a reader, get a copy of Water Dog by Richard Wolters.... I learned more from that book than I did anything else... I miss my labs.....

I picked up Smartwork . I think it was about $25. I admit that I have not done much with it. About the time I recieved it the weather turned too hot to do much training and then a job change had me tied up at work alot more then normal.

The dog did decent and has a season on her so I think I should be able to get her in good shape by next year.

10 min retriever was a good book.

Lots of good info on duck dog basics DVD also.

So are you training a field dog or a pet? I ask because I have no idea how to train a hunting dog....but training a lab to be a good pet is really easy. So easy, even I can do it. Labs are by far and away the best all around dog in my opinion. They can’t be beat.
