    Of course, I've got the critical essentials:
    #1-- rifle, ammo & license, proper clothing and boots
    Next:
    #2 -- essentials that keep me from becoming mulch
    Whistle, compass, knife, emergency blanket
    Nowadays, I'd classify my cellphone in there.

    #3-- Basic comfort
    Buttpad-- Sitting on the ground or on a metal treestand seat sucks a lot of warmth out of you
    proper gloves
    a wool balaclava
    Electric USB Handwarmer-- put this in your bibs under your coat. It does wonders!

    #4 -- For the long sits
    coffee thermos
    boot blankets
    Pepperoni, cheese, and some pretzels

    I am horrible since I got me a backpack.

    knife are the main things.

    My backpack has all of these items in it:
    Knife
    Ammo
    Nocks
    Hunting License
    Calls
    snacks
    Drinks (2 bottles of water and a thermos of coffee)
    Gutting gloves
    Extra pair of socks (feet sweat a lot)
    Gloves
    Toilet Paper (had to give up my socks one day when I was young)

    Knives - 2
    Flashlight
    A Walkie or my Cell Phone
    Surgical gloves
    Regular gloves
