I've been watching videos by GunBlue490. In a few of his videos, he insists that you shouldn't put oil on your guns, that it gunks them up and can ruin them.

I think you misunderstood him. Starting at around 17:30 he explains. He doesn’t recommend a “wet” gun meaning where you can see the oil, but rather a light coating of oil more like a film.

Too much oil will blacken wood stocks too

WD-40 is good on the outside of guns but gums up the insides

Putting the barrel down will help with the wood not soaking it up.

First you have to establish the purpose of the oil. Is it to lube or to protect. If after the season you want to clean and store to protect, then a liberal coating is the ticket. However, the last thing you want to take to the field is a dust attracting debris grabbing coating of oil. Not to mention all the precautions we take to be scent free just to turn around and carry in a stinking gun into the woods. I clean my guns at the beginning and at the end of the season. At the beginning to clean off the preservation coating and at the end of the season to clean and preserve. A light dab on bolts and a little more than a dab on shotgun actions is really all you need for the season.

They didn’t address what happens when you store it for 9 months in a closet like most people do or in a gun safe for 9 months.
