I’ve been off work the last two days trying to get a little deer hunting in. This morning alarm goes off at 3 am and instead of hitting doze .. I must have turned the dang thing off. Next thing I know is I hear my wife’s go off at 6am. Wife starts poking me.. thought you were going hunting.

So... this is how my day started.

Needless to say I even got a later start as my daughter dropped off the grand baby and I decided I was going to play with him for awhile. Which I finally make it to the farm around noon.

I get settled in one of my favorite stands about 12:30, pull up my rifle and was fiddling around with a pocket on my hunting britches trying to get my gloves out. When I hear an awful commotion coming off a ridge to my right & about 100 yards below me. Which I knew it was deer running... and first to come off the ridge was a single doe... tail straight out and flat out covering some real estate fast.

Behind her was a buck on her heels and I saw polished tines. Didn’t know how good a buck but never the less I had to make a decision pretty dang quick. So... shouldered my rifle and picked an opening... soon as the buck hit the clearing ... boom. By 12:45 my buck tag was filled... roughly less than 15 minutes in the stand.

Not a monster by no means but a decent 8 point. I’m satisfied with him and made another memory with the Winchester and about the longest shot on a deer in the woods I ever made. It was around 120 yds in what has to be the clearest spot on the farm.

Which just throwing this out there to those still hunting ... I’ve witnessed the best 11am to 2pm deer movement that I’ve seen in awhile.

Nice buck and nice rifle. I sold my Model 70 Featherweight in 30/06 about 7 years ago and have had seven years of hatred and regret for myself!

I’ve killed several bucks chasing does where all you get is a distant side view or maybe a back view. Most have had some ground shrinkage and I don’t know if maybe its the excitement that gets the better of me or just split second judgement.... but overall never been really disappointed though.

We got ...or better said did (pending what’s been killed on surrounding farms) have 2 really good bucks running around. Fact is I got a glimpse of one....a really nice 10 on opening day. Which was why i wanted to be in this stand ...and honestly he chased a doe in this very same route this 8 point did. My first thought when i saw this buck it was the one on opening day..but apparently not...lol. But the remainder of gun season for me is limited... tomorrow afternoon would have wrapped me up.

So.... I’m happy and now time to do some yote hunting.

Funny thing you brought up Yote's . I was about to hammer down on a yote and thought It will mess up my deer hunting and sure enough right after the coyote left out here came the bucks. Now I kind of wish I had of went on ahead and taken one buck. I could be eating deer burgers and making jerky.

We were taking about this just the other day. You might have 10 seconds to decide and get your gun up before it’s too late.

Yup, after a many years of whacking and stackin, I finally realized I could pile up coyotes and would never affect the rut. If the does have some stench, big boy is still walking through like he owns the place. The Joy's of the rut...
