The SOS is getting old. How about a picture thread?

Stuck inside today since it’s going to
rain all day. So I decided to do a little cooking. Started a venison stew in the crockpot and put together and baked a hickory nut pie. The pie got finished before the stew!

I haven’t had one in years, my late grandma’s specialty. If you gathered the nuts for her she would spend her evenings cracking the nuts with a little hammer and puffing Winstons that she never inhaled lol. After a few days she’d have enough to cook up several pies. Sure miss her.

I used a recipe out of a Southern Accents recipe book. Took me @ 1 1/2 - 2 hours to shell a cup, enough for a pie. Thought you might appreciate the title of the recipe.

I thought “pigs in a poke” meant buying something without even checking it out first?
That is what the old saying is supposed to mean, but wonder how it originated? Maybe farmers took pigs to market in a poke?

When I was a boy a poke was how most people brought their spring feeder pigs home after purchase. Just cut a hole for the snout. I remember seeing folks put a pig in a burlap sack at the old stockyard and into the trunk of their cars several times as a kid.

I've seen that a bunch too.
I remember we were headed home from Mayfield with two Holstein/beef mixed calves in grandpa’s 1966 Chevy pickup when it blowed up on the way back. Took half a day to get those calves home from there and a lot more cussing like a sailor from dad. He hated Chevies worse than blackbirds after that lol, big time Ford man.
