I tend to agree with 1wildcatfan.

I have killed one over corn and it really didnt feel like an accomplishment. I went 2 YEARS without even seeing a deer back in the 80's. How i kept at it i will never know.

I enjoy the satisfaction of patterning them and harvesting one the most. Alas the farm i hunt now is just fields on top and jungle bluffs on the sides. I plant food plots. I fill the freezer typically and am thrilled to do so but i dont get the satisfaction of scouting them and finding where they are, etc. Hunting over my food plots and corn is pretty much like going to the supermarket for me. But yeah...I do it.

Patterning? Over your food plots? Give me a break. Come on Bubbles. I started hunting in the early '73, and I didn't kill a deer until 1981. It was bucks only where I hunted the first few years. Saw very few deer period, much less a buck.

Tickled to death for him and his first deer, hope he gets many more. I may be in the minority but to me it's shooting and not hunting. I shot a doe over corn last night. Did i do anymore work other than get them conditioned to come to corn? Nope. Does that make me a hunter? Not in my eyes. Three does, which one do i want to shoot at 37 yds with a high powered rifle. I was shooting or sniping, not hunting.

Set your corn piles farther away to make you feel better.

You misunderstood my post. I am not patterning them over my food plots. I said it was like going to the grocery. I get no satisfaction or sense of accomplishment from it but it's meat. I miss scouting through the woods and finding current patterns to get one. But the farm close by is convenient and fills the freezer.

Are you saying you don’t use calls, scents, or other artificial methods to entice the animal to alter its natural behavior? Baiting is a legal method of “hunting” in KY and you shouldn’t take away from or degrade this person’s trophy. Drips, grunt calls, bleat calls, urines, mineral licks, and bait fall under the same category. Corn may work better for doe and small bucks than the other lures but they’re all lures. Do you feel like shooting an animal at 500 yards with a high powered rifle is hunting?? If you do, please repeat the question to yourself

I’m sorry you don’t think that is hunting. The professor has put in a lot of work. Scouted with me. Helped hang every stand we have. BTW, not all are set on corn. I wanted him in that shooting house Sat morning because I knew he’d see deer. Normally see 3 or more bucks chasing there in the morning, and not around the corn. Saying he didn’t put in work is a shitty thing to say. He hunted 4 times before he saw his first deer. We aren’t overrun with deer. His first deer, and you come off with that. Very surprised that you would demean anyone’s first deer, regardless of how they killed it. Didn’t expect that from you.

Over corn or not I'm proud as hell of Mr P and all kids for their 1st and every deer and even prouder of you for taking him under your wing and allowing him to experience the hunt and yes I call it a hunt just the same as using a guide for killing an elk, after all in the end a person is just taking the shot right? Sure a person is walking more but the guide is the corn pile. The main thing is he's started and hopefully stays hooked.

I dont use calls, scents, or mineral licks. Only used food plots for 2 years after not seeing 1 single deer up there 3 years ago. Nor do i use cams.

I am not taking away from the professors trophy at all. Very happy for him and BG....whatever gets him hooked is great.

I remember hunting deer for several years without seeing one as well. I had plenty of determination and I loved the challenge. It was always exciting back then to find a big set of tracks. I remember finding my first moderately worn trail around a bench at the top of a mountain, I couldn't sleep for a week because of the anxiety!
