Just one month to go!!
Looking good! I'm well pleased with my field so far. Sunflowers are great and millet is heading throughout. May not be ready by the opener but watch out Labor Day.
Getting some much needed rain today.
Heads are turning. It’s going to be close but I think they should be ready by the opener.
Great looking fields.
Looking good everybody! I had tons of trouble getting my sunflowers right this year, as did many of my friends. Too much rain, then not enough, plus some unknown germination issues created some challenges. Let's hope for a good year.
Great looking field! What is your weed control plan? Looks like it works great.
Rob7, thanks so much. Your field looks amazing! I had struggles for sure this year. My fields do not look very good bu they will do. I plant Clearfield seed. I start with a prowl/spartan pre-emergent prior to planting, and use beyond herbicide if I need it. I skipped the beyond this year just to save some money. I always use select or some other grass killing herbicide post-emergence. The real key for me is cultivating. we have a couple of tractors we used to use for tobacco and i usually plow twice. What is your trick to a clean field?
I too used the prowl/spartan pre-emergent prior to planting. Planted Clearfield seed and then used Lightning in lieu of Beyond due to cost. Used about 33% more Lightning per acre than recommended and had better results. All that being said I still have plenty of weeds however field is less weedy than in years past. Would love to be able to cultivate however not in the budget anytime soon. Next year I am going to add select to the program. Thanks!
I've got a set of 30" 6-row cultivators we've used over the years. It seems like by the time you need to use them, the sunflowers are getting too tall. I'm definitely going the clethodim/select route next year post emergence. The only thing in my field right now is a few patches of johnson grass and blue nightshade. You can't kill nightshade with much of anything.
Field turned out pretty good. Have mowed about 1/2 of it thus far, maybe a hair more. Anyone have suggestions for getting rid of Mares Tail? My one buddy says its really tough to get rid of. Overall pleased with the field.
2 4 d an mix it strong
Round up will kill it if its small; like 4" and under. 2-4D will too. Its a bad weed to deal with. How was the shoot?
Have had 2 on this field so far and both went very well. How did yours go?
Pretty slow, really. Crows and yellow finches have wrecked my field. There's nothing left. We shot on the opening weekend and didn't shoot 30 total between 7 people. I didn't get above 80-100 doves total. I think the crows hurt more than anything.
