I did a couple of hours of prep yesterday. I wanted to burn more but I drew a compromise with the woodcocks. This unit was where I originally started my habitat work by hinging red maples about 1-2 acres in 2019, first fire through the area.

South wind backing down the hill fire. A good bit of multiflora rose and honeysuckle to burn.

I then wrapped around the east end which

set up for some head fire. I went back in a raked out my crop trees better while the fire was working.

The unattended end.

Looked like a good burn.

I can't believe I missed this thread all these years. Man, you have worked your butt off and the improvements are unbelievable. I love everything you've done to this. Big thumbs up

Thanks much, Redlined.

Wednesday I was apprehensive about lighting up with variable sustained gusting winds.

I lit a backburn off the opposite end anyway that immediately turned into a head fire.

Too much heat, I raked out an emergency firebreak and brought my burn to a quick end for the day

This is what too much heat under the wrong conditions looks like.

Thursday, I had consistent south wind and lit er up no worries.

I don't know if you were ever an Allman Brothers fan, but I thought of you while watching a documentary on Chuck Leavell. Chuck was the keyboard player for the Allman Bros and has played with a lot of big bands since. He is also into trees - big time. The show is: Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man

Thought you might enjoy.

Thanks for the lead, I started watching, looks like a great show so far, just getting into the trees, and yeah, you can say that I'm an Allman Brothers fan.

Beautiful snake and good pictures. Move him a long ways from the area. Hopefully he doesn’t return. Then you won’t have to kill him. Don’t want him bitting you or your dogs. Hey SB are you turkey hunting? Have you killed one? Turkeys love burned areas.

Not to worry it is safe.

It didn't waste any time disappearing into a dead log.

If you remove them from their home territory they won't be able to find their hibernacula. I let it go a couple hundred yards up above. I do have two new dogs that still need some snake training.

Turkeys? I had 5-6 toms that I had seen together fall and winter. My neighbor on the other end of my property brought in people and they shot out 4 toms. I have been out hunting and talking some turkey with some turkeys but no shots. I'm mostly just working to get my next burn done.

The fire hatched some pine trees up on the ridge.
