Was surprised when I moved to KY that there were two burn ban seasons. With all the forest in KY you would think they would be using prescribed burning more. I guess some people don’t understand unsafe conditions equipment needed or fire control so they should not be setting fire. Yes it should be made essential in their white oak initiative. People out west are speaking of more prescribed burning to combat wildfires.

The first couple of years here in Kentucky I burned away as if Kentucky were a free state. I didn't even know there was a burn ban.

Good deal. I need to check into EQIP money myself.

For me this all started when I acquired about wooly adelgid.

I finished up over the weekend on my ridge northeastern property line.

I started mulching red maples but decided to stop and see if I could get paid to do so.

The area within the first 4 acre burn was still a log pile

The red maple logs are too far gone for fire wood so I'm just dicing most of it down leaving some for some structure.

I want deer to be able to move freely about this area.

I conducted my burns on the 12th and 13th.

On Thursday the 23rd I was standing on my porch down in the ditch and I smelled a forest fire, which perplexed me. When I was up yesterday, I found what I smelt, 10 days after the fire a big dead hickory burned down.

I am staying the course in my rattlesnake food plot, letting the debris melt down. I'm thinking about spreading some more lime, 6-24-24, and a bag of clover mix.

I finally got a monster 10 trunk red maple sprout mulched to the ground yesterday.

I was figuring on cleaning up and making a real food plot down in the lower rattlesnake food plot. Ain't no way, I'm going to cleanup enough to put up a feeder, a shooting house up on the hill top,

and perhaps a bow stand up in the maple.

Chief Forester Bill and I had our meet up on Wednesday

and this is Bill's plan. 10 year contract, I'll have 1 year to complete TSI on each block but I can do more than one block each year. This plan now goes to the ranking for funding. Bill says funding looks good as Joe's America Rescue Plan is dumping more dollars into the EQIP program.

First shed found on my property, Tank found it, it is goofy jr's.

Tank also found this girl yesterday alive, then she went up the hill and died. I could see through her skin around her mammary glands, she was green inside with bloody juice draining out of her vulva. I believe her fetus died and rotted inside of her.

I started mulching maples yesterday and finished up this morning, before

My number hit in the lottery, I've got some EQIP funds coming my way. Chief Forester is coming out on Wednesday to get started on a specific plan.

You are doing awesome work!

I don't intend - in any way - to sound discouraging, but always remember that government money comes with government responsibilities. Having said that, I've worked with the State Forestry folks and I've always found them to be very knowledgeable and supportive. I've never had any issues at all.

Thanks timer, it's not a trick the Government wants to pay me to hack and squirt trees. Joe put more funds in EQIP with the American rescue Plan. They used to pay some cost share, now they pay what it would cost to hire someone to do it. There are responsibilities, you have to start on time and finish on time, but you can get an extension. You can't drop trees from April to November for the bats. When I finish a unit, I can work the next one. I can burn away. The area that I just mulched is outside of the work units between B and F on the northeast line. My goal for this area is to let them maple stumps sprout in the new sunny spot and perhaps set a stand somewhere.

How long do you have to finish TSI in all those units on your plan? They will pay you to do work or will they let you hire someone? You can’t cut any trees during bat season? Can you cut oak for firewood or milling for personal use? Do they pay for chemicals or saws or chains or saw oil or saw fuel or utv fuel. Thank you.

I have one year to finish a unit. You can do the work yourself or hire it out. No felling trees during bat season. I can double girdle trees in season and come back and drop them if I choose out of bat season. I can drop trees for personal use outside of bat season, no other limitations. Expenses are mine to pay and write off. 2 summers ago I hacked and squirt 10-15 acres in about 2 weeks. I have only one person that I have to deal with, Chief Forester Bill Knott. Bill signs off on the work. Bill has already been in areas that I have worked and has said how good it looks. No one is telling me what trees that I have to kill other than the second story canopy of red maples. My plan is about wildlife as well as improving the timber resource. I can leave trees like sourwood and blackgum. Basically it is my plan but Bill is the one that did all the work to inventory my property and draw up the plan. For folks that need help figuring out what is what the forester will go in and mark the trees to take out and to leave.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Do you know if I would be able to cut red or white oak for my personal firewood out of bat season. When I worked for IN DNR we had a bat season also. There was a lady in charge of bat season. We called her Batwoman.

U bet, I do know, you can cut down whatever trees you want for personal use. You can't hire a logger to come in and start logging. There will be plenty of oak cull trees within my work units.
