A guy wanted a "Son's of Liberty" themed small flat horn to finish out a squirrel hunting rig. Scrimshaw by my self,..horn by Bill Smith.
Flintlock and bag are mine. I use my stuff for props a lot for finished work. Only the horn is leaving the house.
No....it is 100% cow. We heat them and flatten in a vise set up. It's just a different type style of powder horn. They were very common.....originally a Scottish thing I think.
Just asking cause the work on the stock reminded me of a lot my pops built back in the day. Pretty gun.
I wonder if a man made a hound hunting horn like that if it would change the tone? A few years back, Dad made us two hound hunting horns from the horns I cut off a roadkill goat. You fellas ever thought of making hunting horns?
My guess would be yes,..it would diminish your sound,...but I haven't done it. I've ran into a few blowing/hunting horns on other forums and at some of the big shows but they are always round. Horn makers use whatever they find and run into that can be used,......not a dang thing wrong with a goat horn. I think Bill has a few in his shop he hasn't done anything with. Over the years I'm sure he has made a few,......he's been a bag and horn maker for 30 years ish.
What do you use to protect the outside? I’ve bought a couple hound hunting horns lately that look like they sat in a shed and the bugs got to - not much damage but I’d like to fix them.
