I’m considering hunting some in February. Are they primarily living off of their stored nuts at that time of year or another food source?

If you have a fairly good population of Squirrels around your hunt area, February should be good. Especially if it turns out to be a warm February.

From what I've seen here in EKY, the hatches for the squirrels have been incredible. Those small greys you are seeing are just young squirrels. I watched a hole in a tree that had 2 adults and 5 young squirrels all thru rifle season. You could actually see how much they grew in those 15 days. Initially they would come out onto the tree and just hang out. Couple weeks ago out there you could see em scurrying all over the place, older and bolder I guess. Lots of young ones here.

No, those small Squirrels are fully grown adults. I harvested them in August - September. They aren't true Gray Squirrels as they are somewhat darker and only their belly is silver/white like a regular Gray.

Interesting. The ones here are babies.

Sometimes strange things happen when dealing with Squirrels & Hunting them. I've never bagged a "Baby" Squirrel of any type in August or in September; they have all been adults Squirrels. Young baby Squirrels are most likely bagged in our early Season in June, which I am against.

I started hunting squirrels after I finished late muzzleloader deer hunting. Ive had good luck with most days bagging anywhere from 2-5. Probably totaling around 20 so far. till this morning I went and didnt see the first squirrel, going to a new spot in the morning.

I also have bagged Squirrels after Deer Rifle is over. The past two years I've seen very few on my place.
