I hunt over a dog during the fall squirrel season, nothing like it! I have a half feist half cur male dog, I tend to lean more towards the fiest because they handle good, and use their eyes! But there are good ones in both breeds!!
Never owned one but used to hunt with a friend a lot that had a couple. Know what you mean about hunting with eyes & nose. One of his was dynamit for grays but we took both to Trimble Co for fox squirrels. Couple of us took each dog and Cooter would tree but they'd not be there, would cross timber but Jim could follow with eyes. Took 10 with Jim & 1 with Cooter.
I have a 8 month old Busher bred cur that will be going with me sat.
She is a BIG cur and will prob end up being more of a coon dog than squirrel. I am too old and broke down to be running thru the woods at night and hand those duties off to my son but I hope to get her started good on squirrel first.
This was last fall and she was only 3-4months old. As you can tell she was all legs at that time. Her body has caught up with her.
Just got another blackmouth cur pup a couple of weeks ago.
My old bmc is 12 and arthritis makes it too hard on him to hunt much anymore. Plan on using this one for squirrel, coon and to bloodtrail. She is mostly Ladner blood with some Howard thrown in. I like larger dogs that I dont have to worry about coyotes getting, just my preference. Already chasing city squirrels up the tree and baying the cat so we are on our way.
