The farmer won't give you permission to cut them? I'm sure he would understand if you thin them out a bit

We have most of our place set aside as a sanctuary/bedding area. We try not to go in there except to bloodtrail a deer, or do trail and bedding maintenance.
We put food plots outside of the sanctuaries, and deer generally feel pretty safe coming out in them during daylight.
One of our easiest spots to hunt is an old farmhouse. It’s next to our driveway. We’re wanting to see if a wall of cedars between the food plot and the driveway will make deer more relaxed when they’re in there, and if bigger bucks will come out in it during daylight, at any time other than the rut.

Have you ever tried Egyptian Wheat for screen. I tried it first time this year and was very pleased. Defenitely had more daylight big buck activity on food plots that were screened with it. If you plant beside your conifers it will provide screen until the trees get taller. Only downside is it is an annual so lotta work for one season but effective in my opinion. Deer won’t eat it so you can also use to provide screen for entry exit to your sets because doesn’t draw deer to it.

We are going to but he could make a fortune selling fence posts! All wooded so the cedars are dispersed among the hardwood and actually chokes out a lot of growth. We can thin but to make a significant difference I’d probably have to cut all day everyday from now until next season!

I haven’t tried Egyptian Wheat, but it sounds like I need to.
Another tall plant I hope to try is Miscanthus Giganteus.
It takes a few years to get established, but once it does...

I took this picture January 1st.

Mischanthus is better long term but EW will get 8 to 12 feet tall in few months If you plant about 20’ wide you will have great concealment next fall. I’m doin same as you with the pines for the long term screen. I get mine from Coldstream Farms. I’ve been happy with their trees. Where do you get yours.

Do they not bed in the cedars or are the trees to big and open underneath/ not thick enough for bedding?

Did you drill your seed in or were you able to till and broadcast your seed? I'm very interested in this.

Yes some areas but I’m talking a lot of cedars. Many die because of no room to grow with the other hardwoods.
