Last 1 I heard was in late 80s when I lived in Florence. I was maybe 4-5 miles from Cincinnati Airport. Was on a ladder extended way out, I was near top painting on house. Boom caused me to grab tight on ladder, scared me bad. Later local news announced there was a sonic boom at airport.

I saw they scrambled F-16s to intercept an unidentified jet that wasn't responding to ATC. Isn't the F-16 one of the older fighter jets in our inventory? Protecting DC and the cities on the east coast?!?

My husband grew up mostly in Southern Illinois along the Wabash River. The military used to do practice runs along the river bottoms, targeting off of various buildings near the river (including a church which resulted in a whole bunch of pissed off Southern Baptists screaming at the base commander when the planes interrupted their Sunday services one too many times). Coincidentally, the river bottoms also grew some of the tallest corn hubby ever remembers seeing with all kinds of little country roads woven throughout. He loved riding his bicycle as a teen & often biked those roads. He was out early one Saturday morning, miles from home, surrounded by corn that was way over his head when he heard a roar and a fighter jet came thru he swore less than 20' over his head. The wash had the corn whipping every which way & it just about knocked him off his bike. Ater that, he didn't bike out that way any more!

As for booms, back when I was in grade school (early 1970's), there were a couple of young men from our little E KY community who had made it high up in the air force. If their flight paths were close enough, they'd zoom over the area & punch it right over top the school. The booms rattled the windows, pissed off the teachers, and absolutely THRILLED all of us kids!

Back in the day, I would see the F-4 jets flying runs down the Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam. I've seen jets flying down the long stretch of the river past Helm's Landing and Creelsboro that weren't much higher than the trees. I remember it seemed to me like the jets were water skiing through the air - sliding sideways at a very slight angle as the thrust from the engines (loud on an F-4) blurred the air behind them.

They did the same thing over on our end of the county. Coming up Spring Creek off of Dale Hollow

Here in Knott Co. we usually see some fighter jets flying over just above the hilltops at least once or twice a year, but you have to be quick to look up when you hear them because they are out of sight in a couple seconds. Was back in the gap at the head of our hollow a few years ago and saw a couple of Ospreys fly over side by side! Haven't seen any since. Years ago when I was working near Pikeville used to see B-52's fly over at least once a week! Always makes me proud to see our air force in action!

We don't get the jets but the helicopters from Ft. Campbell must have a training route right over my back yard. Most of the time they're up around 500' in flights of 2 or 3 but every now and then they'll fly over at about 100' (or less) and that'll sure shake the windows ... especially at night!
