Spoke to two COs yesterday and confirmed a bunch quit and part of the issue was the disparity in raises with KYSP.
So I’ve said this for a long time…kdfwr as an agency cannot support it’s own LEO division. Their funding structure, and being a subdivision of the tourism cabinet is simply inadequate. The kdfwr annual budget is around 50 million compared to +\- 220 million for ksp. The two agencies simply don’t compare. I think it would make sense to make wardens a division of ksp like they did with highway a number of years ago. I think the wardens in Alaska and some other states are part of their state police. That would conceivably also free up funds at kdfwr to help better manage wma’s, fund studies, or maybe plant some dove fields that are worth a $hit?? Just my thoughts

I don't have a dog in this fight, but my guess is pay is the biggest deterent. 40-50k a year for either a trooper or CO job? LOL no way in hell. Either of those jobs , possibly entitles a life threatening situation every single time they respond to a call.

As far as I know, the tat policy has been in effect since 1948. It is a well known policy. Didn't say applicants can't have tatoos, just that they can't be visible wearing summer uniform. I agree that there are a lot of great people with visible tats. Can't have facial hair either. Another policy. Didn't just spring these policies on anyone. If you want to be a Trooper, these policies are well known. Don't get a tat that's visible in summer uniform. Can't follow that, how many other "antiquated " policies will they ignore?
I love having a thin beard. I’m going back to the volunteer fire dept. You’re not allowed to have anything besides a mustache if you plan on making an interior attack on a fire because you won’t be able to get a seal on your scba mask. Guess what? I will be sporting the Ron Jeremy and not complaining.

There you go. Making choices that adhere to policy.

From the looks of the hunting forum, we already have plenty of volunteer game wardens. AS is should be.
Get off my land, you are trespassing, your tree stand is on my land, I see spot lights. List goes on.
There is no law agency that can be at the right place at a moment's notice, I can't see the state police of sheriff measuring or counting fish.
All the law dogs I have seen don't want to get their shinny shoes dirty or even leave the comfort of the vehicle they are driving.
All the game wardens I have seen are glad to hoof the hills and some are pretty sneaky.

I agree with all of what you said except for not wanting to get their shoes dirty. Come to Gc. They’ll chase you through creeks and briars on foot. I know one who had to go home and change because he got so muddy from a foot pursuit.

I have been checked in the field once at a public dove field and once on the water when a passenger was sitting on the bow while I was idling

You really think the dudes who went through Paris Island and Graduated into the marine corp couldn’t graduate the academy? Remove your tattoos policy and take in a group of tatted, grunts and marines and that first class would have a 75-80% pass rate. You are absolutely foolish to believe otherwise. You have a bunch of soft ass humans applying now that go in with no chance. The vast majority of the academy is a strategic physical beat down to break you down mentally and turn you into a machine. If that parts already been done the worst parts over.
Just because you were a Marine doesn’t mean you’re going to make it through the academy. There is more than just “physical beatdowns”, of which there are plenty, especially in the first couple weeks. In my cadet class Drivers Training got a couple, that was 10 weeks in. Firearms Training usually gets a few, even with re-training. I will say the ex Marines I had in my class were solid, as were the others who were prior military. I ended my 7 year Army career on Monday and was in the academy on Sunday, which was a good thing. The SP academy is just like basic training, but more demanding. I did basic training (Army) in 1988 at Ft. McClellan, Alabama and I can tell you unequivocally that the academy was tougher, mentally, physically, emotionally and academically. The only difference to me was I knew I was going home on the weekends in the academy (if I didn’t get too many demerits), that wasn’t happening in basic training.

It sure was the happiest 22 weeks of my life! LOL!!!

I can promise you I didn’t give a flying fart about getting my shoes or uniform dirty!
