Downside is that you just interjected yourself into a non life threatening situation that could lead to a life threatening situation. There is no winning in todays society.

I may see 2-3 CO’s a year in passing on the road. I see 2-4 State Troopers a week. So maybe whoever is doing their hiring needs to take over the hiring for KDFWR.
That’s kinda what I’m eluding to.

I have been hunting and fishing all my life, I am 36 and have had a co check my fishing liscense twice. Never have I once been checked hunting. I have a co that lives about 3 miles north of me and one about a mile and a half south of me. I seldom see there fish and wildlife vehicles leave their driveway.

But the one officer I see regularly mowing grass, hauling cedar logs he cuts, he helped a guy dig septic systems for a while. And owns and operates a small store/processing business.

I’m sure it’s just a decoy

So I’ve said this for a long time…kdfwr as an agency cannot support its own LEO division. Their funding structure, and being a subdivision of the tourism cabinet is simply inadequate. The kdfwr annual budget is around 50 million compared to +\- 220 million for ksp. The two agencies simply don’t compare. I think it would make sense to make wardens a division of ksp like they did with highway a number of years ago. I think the wardens in Alaska and some other states are part of their state police. That would conceivably also free up funds at kdfwr to help better manage wma’s, fund studies, or maybe plant some dove fields that are worth a $hit?? Just my thoughts
Sir you have perfectly articulated what my ignorant ass couldn’t. Thank you!

I’ve been checked one time in 34 years of hunting. We met a warden on the road while on a quota hunt. We had deer legs hanging out everywhere. We’d killed 4 does at Barren River WMA. Quick and easy check and he was on his way. Haven’t seen a warden consistently since Sammie Renfro was my neighbor as a kid growing up.

I've been checked on the water a bunch, fishing from the bank at the dam several times, and at every public dove field I have ever been to on the first weekend of season. When I was a kid, I got a little bit of a sour taste for CO's. We traveled west to deer hunt as growing up in the late 80's and early 90's in Knott county, there were few deer to be found. Every year we were down there, a group of CO's would come into our camp, go through out freezers, look at all the decor in the house and ask for past check in information for every set of antlers around the place. Mind you, some of these deer were killed in the 80's and 90's where check in wasn't a thing. They would raise a stink every time with us but never wrote a ticket. We always felt like a local, who was unhappy that we had access to some of the properties we had, would call and make a false report of us. The only ticket that was ever written was to my uncle who was driving gravel roads the night before gun opener with a bow in a bow case in the bed of his truck. Apparently he was an attempted poacher LOL!!

I respect our CO's. I really do. But my only encounter with one in the field was extremely negative (trying to tell me I had to have a license to hunt on my own farm & accusing me of tagging a buck so my husband could continue to hunt) so I'm thankful that particular one is no longer working as a CO. Unfortunately, he's now a police officer... Grrrrr!!!!!! If the way he acted towards me is any indicator, he's a disgrace no matter what uniform he's wearing.

Checked on Ky Lake 25 yrs ago. I was casting, wife (pre-kids, leave it at that) sunbathing in back of bassboat. Two guys came over and checked everything out (I'd have done the same in their position).
Boys were 9 & 11, had two does on utility trailer and stopped at TSC in Bardstown. Came out and two COs checking them out. Asked if they were mine, I said nope. Gave me a funny look and asked who they belonged to. Told em my two boys. Boys got out of the truck and the COs were awesome. Explained to the boys what they did and why. Had the deer tagged, they told boys good job on that and what they look for. COs gave em some pins, stickers, etc.

I’ve been checked a bunch, fishing mostly but all were positive encounters. Now I have seen a few less than positive encounters. I saw a guy get a ticket for drinking on a WMA because he had weeks old beer cans in a dirty cooler that obviously hadn’t had ice or a beer in it for weeks or more..
I never understood that one and I saw it. The sad truth is that you have some bad elements in every job and every walk of life.. that’s just the way it is, just try not to let the few bad tarnish the mostly good..

The state as a whole has had major staffing troubles for a while. Many Ky state departments are among the lowest paid in the nation and they have destroyed the retirement system. Not to mention the health insurance

That’s a huge issue. I know a thing or two about state government. I’m not a “big government” guy, but do believe government needs to be able to provide quality services. But when you have garbage benefits, and people can go work in fast food and make more money than many state positions start at you can’t fill positions or attract quality applicants. Meanwhile all you have to do is go online and look at the laundry list of political appointees making over 6 figures. Don’t get me started on the legislature…
