Thinking about going fishing below the dam at Rough River. I know it’s fished a lot, but was wondering if anyone ever fishes it for catfish. And if so, I guess big water fishing in general, how do you rig for catfish? Fish on the bottom? Bobber with a stop? What? Thanks.

Carolina rig with about 18-24" leader. Circle hook sized to your bait and setup. Big rod, big bait = 8/0 or 9/0 hook.

Eating sized blues with a small piece of cut bait, I use a 4/0 or 5/0 hook.

I drift through holes or anchor on a hole I use the same rig.

Occasionally I use a three-way rig with a three way swivel but I'm not liking that setup more and more. Too much stuff and the leader tends to twist around the sinker dropper and mainline.

Either will work for catfish down there, since you're primarily fishing for channels with an outside shot at a flathead I'd say an oversized minnow or small bluegill either on bottom or suspended under a bobber 3-5 feet deep. You could also try cutbait but as late in the spring as it is, flatheads most likely won't touch it so you'll be after channels using that.

I just didn’t know if down there the bottom was those big rocks and I’d be constantly hung up.

Are they working on the dam? If so how is the water below it and in the lake?
Yeah. I watched a girl on YouTube who fishes down below the dam and the water wasn’t moving super fast it didn’t look like. It was a couple weeks ago when posted. I don’t remember what the new summer pool is though.

Wife and I drove by there yesterday evening. Hardly a trickle of water coming through the spillway. A few people fishing but didn’t see anyone catch anything. Lots of rocks near the spillway but not as many down stream. Went over by falls of rough also. Very little water moving.
