I saw something going around a FB group I belong to about the Dept considering taxing or registering or permitting kayaks, canoes, SUP's, and other manual powered watercraft. Anyone else heard anything along those lines?

I sure hope they don't. Hopefully with the republican majority in the house now it'll never happen.

Would it have to be a law passed by the legislature or could the commission just decide to on their own since they already regulate waterways and watercraft?

How could they do it to folks that already own say a yak?? They aren't registered or anything at time of purchase. Guess they catch u out and ticket you or something?? I mean part of the benefit of owning one is the ease of upkeep and lack of cost to maintain. I sure hope its BS or a misunderstanding.

More access would be nice but I seriously doubt the department would be able to do much unless the registrations are outrageous.

Maybe they are looking at the state of Mn with the boundry waters area where you have to purchase a permit for Canoes and Kayaks. I can't see it being over a few dollars tops if they did get such a law. Being most of those type craft are green people they would not mind shelling out a few dollars to help the environment.

Have they not already got a little piece of them via the Dingell -Johnson act? I would assume kayaks and canoes are taxed under the act but cannot confirm from reading the info I have found thus far.

I don't know about that Duster. The vocal majority on the FB group oppose it. However, they equate it to taking a walk in a park, saying you don't have to pay for that, but they also only mostly paddle in The Parklands and don't often venture out to many other places. But then again, a lot do go to Harrods Creek and pay to launch from Captain's Quarters, (like $5 per vessel each time) so there's that. (these are all places in the Louisville area).

However, while I don't often venture out to many lakes to fish, I do venture out to a lot of other creeks and take my yak. That's the main reason I got it. I don't have any issues finding launch sites and take out points with what I want to do. Frankly, I don't want it to be easy. Floyds Fork was a lot less busy and the fishing was much better before they made it more accessible.
