Hey guys...hope this is not a repeat, search feature wasnt working for me to look for this topic. If so, sorry.

I got a pretty nice buck Sunday morning from LBL and have decided I'm going to mount him. My taxidermist is on vacation until Dec 11. I think I have a freezer to put the head/cape in if that is best. Is there anything other than covering with a garbage bag that one should do to make sure its ok for his return?

    thanks for any help--JP

    p.s. here's a pic

From my limited knowledge thats all you need to do. Good choice on mounting that buck.

    Nice LBL kill JP!

In the past, I have just wrapped both cape and head in a heavy plastic or a strong garbage bag. That'll keep him until you can get it to your taxidermist. Should be all you need to do.

    Congratulations!

Ensure that you keep plenty of cape that is usually the biggest problem.

Make sure you leave him plenty of cape. Make shoalder incission along brown/white hair line closest to rear end of deer.Leave as much brisket skin on as you can. He can sew up even if you split chest up to far. Put in garbage bag, get to Taxi as soon as you can. Don't let it freezer burn.

Aside from leaving plenty of cape, lay cape down flat and spread out with hair side down ,fold hide from one side to center and then fold from the other so they meat in the center. Then fold one more time down the center and roll up.This keeps the hair from comeing in contact with the meat side of the cape and keeps the hair cleaner and there is not as much chance of blood staining, not to mention it will make the job easyer on the taxidermist.

    Leave enough cape.
Stay away from lips, eyes, and ears unless you are experienced at splitting and turning.
Keep in a deep freezer rolled up hair side out. Put in a garbage bag to freeze.
