Pecan Tree Security

I have tried my best to get pecan trees started but I have had no luck at all.

I planted my first 2 around 11 or 12 years ago. An Elliot and a Cape Fear. We soon after got hit with a hailstorm and all of my trees took a beating. The Cape Fear didn't make it. 3 Years ago the Elliot started blooming and I got 2 or 3 pecans the last 2 years. This year I have around 20. I think it was last spring or 2 falls ago I planted 2 pollinators for it...a Desireable and a Mayhan. The Desireable didn't make it but the Mayhan has been growing like crazy. So all in all I'm batting 50% at the moment and may throw a couple more in the ground yet. I like'em..trees are pretty..and the pecans off of the Elliot are good stuff. We'll see what happens when my Mayhan starts to bloom in a few years. I couldn't tell you where the closest pecan tree is to me but the Elliot is getting a little from somewhere. I prefer fall plantings but planting is sometimes based on availability etc,..just my .02. You've probably forgot more about farming and growing than I'll ever know...but that's my experience so far with the pecans

I set 2 out in my parents yard about 1980. One died. I replaced it and That one died also. Maybe did a 3rd one I don't remember, but the One that lived is a big tree and it does have a few pecans on it. As you know, you need 2 trees.

My brother in law had a monster tree in his yard ,it had smaller pecan nuts ,on it they said it was a cross with a hickory.The nuts looked like and taste like pecans ,just a smaller nut .

Here is a few mighty specimens from down south. They had just started dropping....I sniffed out a few to bring home.

I usually go ride the Hickman County, Kentucky Mississippi River bottoms around this time of year as they’re full of pecan trees. You can fill up a sack right on the road sides.

There are miles and miles of county farm roads in the bottoms between Clinton and Hickman in Fulton County.
