Peadbody...is it just a killing field?

I've hunted Peabody for 3 years now and this morning took the cake. I hunted a small parecel. I know there was a deer killed there Friday evening and this morning I counted probably 8 shots on that small couple hundred acre tract. Do the locals just use that area to slaughter the deer? I really don't get it since Kentucky has the food and the genetics to grow truly great deer and support a large population. I'm from SC so I know what this leads to and its not good. All the trucks had KY tags.

This is pretty common.. Not every shot you heard was bucks being shot. A lot of folks will be shooting does to eat, and Peabody is supporting more deer now than it was. 5-6 yrs ago.. Many locals don't own or lease their own ground and Peabody is their best opportunity to fill their freezer or punch a tag.

I understand but all that on one morning in a spot the size of maybe 200 acres? Makes no sense. One guy shot three different times...maybe he missed but I doubt it. Why wouldn't you move to another area instead of killing off the population of that area. I understand other deer will move in, possibly. It almost sounded like opening day of rifle season. Also are you allowed to hunt that "off limits area" because I swear I saw people hunting it?

I've hunted peabody for 35 years even before it was a wma. KBM is dead on about the does. But it does seem like there are more hunting peabody this year as well.

Don't know what off limits are you are talking about. There is a lot of private ground down there with some large acreage that is guided on. You better know where you are or perhaps it would be best for you to hunt another spot.

It's a large area in red that is on all the maps. I know all the boundaries of where I go. I google earth and everything and overlay with maps.

I learned that some of the shots were indeed unloading and at least two accounted for a coyote, a great thing because you sure don't want em like we have em, and a doe. So my apologies to some of those hunting that area. I'm just glad, through the miracle of the internet and this board, I found out what happened. Again I apologize.

Over the years more shots are fired on Sunday for people to head home, go to church, or fill doe tags. Not everyone is a trophy hunter and not everyone can afford to lease, buy property, or even travel to hunt in better areas. Most all areas of Peabody are surround by private property and hard to locate shots exactly. Many who hunt private property like myself that surrounds Peabody struggle to keep people off. Unfourtanetly the lines are poorly marked and sportsmanship is not followed. Rules and laws are to be enforced not only by KDFWR but also by other hunters. Seems many have forgot that meat hunters are still out there and always will be...trophy hunters forget population density is a key management tool. One reason if you look at KDFWR on gun season dates for public areas being shorter than county wide private. We all need to follow the rules. Im sure the next time someone trespass or see hunters in zoned areas they could call the local warden 270-604-3021. Im sure he would respond quickly even on a Sunday morning like today.

You can't get there from here.

It leads to dead deer, nothing more. Not everyone is a trophy hunter.

In a previous job, we traveled to Wendell Ford training area to train students. We were down there a few days each month, twice in the heat of gun season. To hunt in that training area, you need to be military, assigned to Wendell ford or activly training there. We could have hunted, but did not have the time due to the work we had to do. Never saw any other hunters there either. Many big deer and I mean big. We were picking up big sheds every spring. Also, saw pheasant and many woodcock there also.

There were hardly any shots coming off of the training center this weekend. They had a bunch in doing maneuvers.

So if we aren't supposed to be killing the deer on Peabody, beacause we know what that will lead to, what do you suggest we do over there instead?

It used to be a quota hunt area.

Not only is the whftc opened earlier to shotgun hunting keep inind they fire thousands of rounds off and on in training. Plus you have many small game hunters out there as well. Also keep in mind lots of people go there simply to shoot and target practice as well as sight in their rifles.
