Got this off another website, posted by a forum moderater on 10-08-2007.

"Ace, they have documented 3,000, but our commissioner said that the estimate is over 100,000 statewide. That's a lot of dead deer. Last I checked, all but 3 or 4 counties have been affected."

I hope this is about the end of it, I doubt it though, no rain or frost in sight.

I want to see that in writing from the department before I crap a rather large brick and put a scratch in the hardwood floor...

I find that hard to believe, 100,000. Like you stated it is an estimate and just that. I know there is no way anyone will really know but that is alot. lol

Tho we have been hearing alot about dead deer being found, i think if it were that high, we would all know about it!

I find that really high,as that would come out to about a little over 800 dead deer per county.......... although I am not a biologist............

  6. Are they talking about Kentucky or the entire EHD footprint?

Just wait and see , they are finding them dead all over the eastern part of KY and I mean lots of them. One of my buddies has found four mature bucks in the last week dead and does on top of that.

Guys, just passing it on. Forum mod who posted is very well respected and is in the know. I met him at the LKS convention and is an older gentleman and seems like a fine fellow. Again just passing on info.

I would not find that hard to believe because of what I have seen and heard of other people finding, but I would also believe the department would never post that if it were true because of the loss of out of state hunting dollars it would cost them.

If the dept. est. kys deer herd at a millon deer and hunters harvest a little over a 100000 this year. You add that figure with the EHD est die off of a 100000 then that comes up to about 20% of the total statewide deer herd............eliminated..........still leaves 800000 deer in ky,thats alot of deer............

    I agree!

Also shows why it's always important that the seasons are NOT set in STATUTES , IF we ever had a major outbreak of something it would be next to impossible to correct! Regulations are not near the problem to correct that Statutes are in Ky!

That's also why it's so very important to let the biologists determine what's best for all! :)

Wasnt there a news story on WHAS 11 within the last few days of a farmer that had around 20 dead deer in or around one of his ponds?

Take a look at the harvest numbers for the state......How many show around a 1000 deer or more harvested by hunters? Do you not think that a virus like EHD can do that or more?

Correct, but if there are truly that many deer dead before the first gun season then the harvest should be down tremendously. Basically there will be fewer deer killed because there will be fewer deer seen. I mean if 10% of the deer are already dead then the harvest should be down around 10%. Right?

I know it's not that basic but there it is.
