*** CROSS POSTING TO THE TRAPPING FORUM...ANYONE NEAR PENDLETON CO. 5-6 MILES EAST OF FALMOUTH HAVE ANY INTEREST HERE? ***

Within the past few weeks we have noticed several catfish carcasses (probably 8-10 that we can find) on the pond banks on our place. These cats are probably in the 4-8 lb range.

Dad called the game warden today and without hesitation the game warden said it's otters.

We don't have much experience with these critters and don't trap. A few questions if anyone has answers:

    1. Best way to remedy this?

    2. The nearest reasonably sized creek is about 700 yds away. Are they likely now staying each day near the pond vs. traveling each day back and forth to that creek?

    3. Where are they likely to be holing up overnight if staying near the pond?

    4. Best time to be on the lookout for them (morning/night/all day)?

Located in Pendleton Co about 5-6 miles east of Falmouth if anyone is interested in trying to trap them. We just want em gone.

Get @riverboss to bring his Thermal Scope/Rifle and do some practice on them. They mostly operate at night.

I’ve got one here in my creek that I’ve been thinking of shooting. Only ever see him in the morning. Cute little critter though. Kind hate to go that route but he’s a fishing pro!!!!

It's otters..... I am no expert but have a little experience. They will wreck your pond. Heard rumors the KDFWR introduced them several years back but don't know if that's true.

Get some traps called body traps. Body Traps — Duke Traps

I like the #330 size. You will also need a trap set tool (like a large set of pliers). Be careful, I believe you could lose a finger if you set it off on yourself.

Set a few of them in the creek. look a trail near the pond where they are coming out/going in and set them there as well.

You can hunt them but they are fast and move erratically, shoot quickly.

    Good luck.

You're talking about conibears, and do NOT set them #330 on trails, illegal actually.

We usually get 2-3 at a time. As long as there aren’t more they are pretty easy to shoot in mornings.
Any small rimfire will get it done, 17HM2 is my preference. Turkey load should get you the range if you don’t have a suitable rifle or have neighbors.

Im ignorant on the matter, whats the reasoning? High likelihood of killing something else?

Their reasoning I'm not sure of. But a 330 is a BAMF. I'd sure hate to kick one

Yes it's big enough to kill a big dog and very hard to compress the springs. So the scenario would be if your neighbor move down from the city and was walking their dog and it gets in the trap dead dog lawsuit probably have Young news
