Hate that it turned out the way it did but at least you know.

Also.....just throwing this out there..... probably not EHD / blue tongue if you believe you saw him in November. As frost in October and cooler temps take care of the midges that spread it. You also normally find EHD deer near water sources concerning the fever that accompanies it.

My guess would be he died from a bullet or a Rage to find him in a bedding area like you did.

No velvet at all on his antlers in the dead head pics. I have a few pics of him in Sept when he lost his velvet. Sept 17th if I'm not mistaking is the day he lost all his velvet.

I'm not 100% sure it was him I saw in Nov. I just got a glimpse of a dark chocolate horned buck snaking in and out of the cedars I was in. But I found the skull in a creek...it was up side down in the mud and the antlers were submerged in the mud. Who knows how he died. Just glad to find him.

I doubt old age...the teeth in the skull have no wear at all on them.

No that poor guy clearly flipped over into the creek when trying to take a drink. A rival deer only 6 or 8pts saw his chance and came by to stick his smaller inferior antlers in his butt, knowing he could never beat hoss in a real showdown.
Superdaddy did a total endo into the creek, upsidedown, Antlers stuck, head underwater, drown him...
Little ol 6pt bred 3 does after that. Though none were impressed.

Wow!! You are a wise woodsman! I’m at awe you can gather all that info from limited information at hand. I hope one day to be as wise as you.

What a great deer. It wasn't the way you wanted to get him, but at least you got him.

At least you found him and got hands on him (didn’t leave you wondering for the rest of your life what happened to him). Since the rack is good I’d either do a nice euro, or get him to your taxidermist and do a full shoulder mount on him. Either way, congrats on the find.

I'm going to end up doing a nice Euro mount. I've also got to get a tape on him.

That is a great story. I'm glad you were able to find him and that his antlers were intact.

Not the greatest ending but at least you found him. I’ve had a few over the years disappear and you never know what happened. I think blue tongue and poaching account for many.
