We’ve been driving hard and finally back home in Kentucky this morning. I’m beat mainly from the drive but can’t relay in words how enjoyable this hunt was. We drove a lot country and made several long stalks to try to get in ranges I was comfortable with to only be busted. But when it worked and shot made…. you earned it and just felt a great feeling of accomplishment. Overall it was a relaxed hunt and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I appreciate all the kind words from everyone here and made the hunt even more enjoyable.

I also wanted to add….. be damn glad we don’t have these bushes(cholla cactus) in Ky. I have no doubt the devil himself made these.

Heck of a shot you made! Was that the longest shot you have every made on an animal? Were most shots you were looking to take going to be that far?

Yes…. longest shot for me on a live animal. Which the 325 yds was the last range my guide called and the pronghorn buck was still prodding around 7-8 does… it was probably a bit further.

In turn before going on this trip I shot out to 300. Which I could hit targets at 300 but I was really comfortable at 200. But after getting there ….. was no shot under 300 yds.

I’d highly recommend practicing the 300- 400 yd range . At least for this part of New Mexico.

Stand on a coke can and see 20 miles.
Forgot to tell you to pack tweezers. Cactus thorns are the devil. "Jumping" cholla is nasty.

Congrats and well done, JD. Good to see you on here. You were about 2 hours north of where we usually mule deer hunt down around Artesia/Roswell area. I hope you took the time to eat some of the local food, homemade tortillas, etc. Great area. Seeing your pics makes me want to go back

That’s a yes on the Mexican food…. pretty much 3 days straight and still not recovered. I was a tad concerned for awhile last night that my wife wouldn’t let me sleep indoors…lol.

Overall ….. it was some of the best Mexican food I’ve eaten. Some of it I couldn’t pronounce or much less type on here. Which I even ate some type of jerky … think they called carne seca. It was different.

As far as not being on here much…. lost my mom back in October and my father in law passed away just a little over a month ago. Both had dementia along with other health issues…… we had our hands full to say the least.

I had this hunt booked since December and a few times I didn’t know if I was going to be able to go.

My FIL was the person I’ve hunted with for the last 34 years….. it’s a lot different for me now. But my grandson just turned 3 at the end of June and starting to get him out tromping around the farm.

Sorry to hear that, JD. That Grandson will keep you out there, though.

JD,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your Mom and FIL.
I am sure that the Grandson will keep you busy. I bet he has grown a bunch.
