I’ve never faced before in my turkey hunting career. I’m sure hunting in level country is dif, never done it. But here in the mountains u always want to start up high. Always try to get above or on same level as the turkey at least. This yr gonna be a diff ballgame. At least first couple hundred yards of tops of the mountains is a massacre of trees. Gonna be a challenge for sure.
Same here Mudhole, it will def chg how they approach at times. If there is a down tree on a road between you and the bird could make the bird hang up! Just keep that in mind if you run into that situation. Might have to change angles to where they don't have to come thru that!
I've dealt with it since 09, so I feel your pain. I've said it before, but that ice storm in 09 ruined the best turkey farm in Taylor county. I still kill a few birds off of it, but it was a dream farm when the pines were still standing on the ridges. Damn wastelands up top now.
I’m kiddin with ya. Yea it’ll be a challenge but hey way I see it if they want you bad enough they will come. Just try to get on same level with them. There’s exceptions for sure but a lot of times Turks will fly up hill then go down. I hate it for y’all messing with all these down trees gettin in the way. Y’all will prevail.
It’s bad. But we gonna have to start waaaaay below where we usually start and that’s means steep walking lol
Look on the bright side. That's good nesting and bedding habitat. Might work in your favor in a year or two
My old farm was same way, except a cedar thicket. For some reason, they had several strut zones in that cedar thicket. There was a logging road just above that thicket, and I can't count the number of birds I killed in that logging road. Once the ice storm destroyed those cedars, it ruined that spot.
Idk what part of Ky u travel hunt but This is dif areas of knott co. But from reports it’s like this in all east ky counties. However, from what I’ve witnessed it’s like this only the top 3rd of the mountain. Letcher and Harlan co have a lot more elevation so I suspect those counties to be worse.
