I used to live in western ky for 26 years... there is 5 counties that have bait bans... their reason was to stop cwd.. no ban on food plots

Feeding of Wildlife
From March 1 through July 31, it is illegal to feed wildlife with grain, seed or manufactured animal feed outside the curtilage of the home (the area immediately surrounding a home or group of homes). This regulation does not apply to normal agricultural practices or food plots, or municipal areas not open to legal hunting or trapping.This is from the New hunting guide. Food plots are ok.

Just my 2cents worth…. But the recharging of their physical needs is the period after the rut…. December to March when there’s not much browse nor agriculture to benefit them. Which is also the time period from a hunter perspective we stop feeding when they need it the most.
Feeding deer in the summer…… there’s plenty for them to eat. It’s not necessary and only really serves the purpose of patterning for early bow season and pics on game cameras. It has more use to the hunter than anything.
Now salt / mineral licks… depends on what we put out… but I do think there’s some benefit to does & fawns when nursing. But not much for bucks & antler growth. Most all the mineral advertised to enhance antler growth is hype and selling a pipe dream to hunters buying into it.
There’s several factors to trophy antlers but #1 is age and you can’t buy that in a bag.

You'll go broke trying to manipulate the health of a free range deer herd on a small parcel of land. The deer will be just fine.
I thought this regulation was intended to stop turkeys from coming to feeders during the springtime. Obviously it’s purpose is two fold. I do believe that supplemental feeding from Winter thru late Summer does increase antler size and that was my issue with this feeding ban.

Actually they changed the wording in the hunting guide but the actual regulation still bans salt. They have a proposed regulation that removes salt, minerals and other attractant from the ban but it hasn’t been passed by the legislature.
That's what I thought also, but the more regulations we get from the KDFWR, the more I'm convinced they don't have a clue.

- 301 KAR 2:015 – Feeding of wildlife
- This administrative regulation establishes restrictions on the feeding of wildlife that will serve to protect wildlife from disease and toxic substances that may cause harm to the wildlife population if left unregulated. The amendment prohibits baiting and feeding of all wildlife in a department-designated Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Surveillance Zone or Management Zone county, including grains, salt, mineral and other attractants, except for normal agricultural practices, including food plots, bird feeders within the curtilage of the home; and furbearer trapping (trappers shall use no grain, salt or mineral). Surveillance Zone counties are listed on the department's website at fw.ky.gov. A Management Zone would only be established if CWD was detected in Kentucky. At this time, the disease has not been found in the state.

I have woods around my home. Would my mowed area around my house be considered the curtilage area around my home? That mowed area is up to 40 yards wide on one side.
