Hunting coons in western KY is a whole different world than hunting them in the hills and hollers of the eastern part of the state. I've never been coon hunting west of I-65 so I can't give you any advice on how you would begin. But I wanted to let you know that I admire your gumption!
If you’re a reader I’d suggest getting the Walk With Wick books by John Wick. Also, check out the Nite Life Kennel YouTube channel and Nite Life Nation podcast. There’s a lot of good information on both.
I grew up hunting several night a week in Spencer Co with my Dad and uncles. Was in the Bullitt Co Coon hunters club even hunted in several youth hunts once I could identify my dog from others and know the difference between a strike and tree bark. I would get a Nite Lite setup with helmet and belt. You could probably find a used one somewhere online. Then try to find local people who go or a club and just tag along before buying a dog(s) of your own. Hardest part is keeping dogs on property you permission to hunt. You will have to eventually call people to get permission to go get your dogs or be out all night because they ran deer for 2 counties over... but it was a huge part of my youth and I have a lot of memories drinking black coffee and spending time with Dad. Good luck to you.
I’d say that’s why the Curs and Treeing Curs have become popular - biddability. Of course, hunting a Cur isn’t like hunting a hound, so it might not be what some are looking for.
