need some help identifying a gun

    my buddy called me over to look at a gun he found in his grandfathers old house he says he knows its a .303 but the only info on the gun is ph 774 and no. 4mk1 any rough guessses or help would be appreciated

    Sounds like a british enfield mk4 303 and I think its the better model. I like the sights.

    Enfield #4 Mark 1. Great gun. One of the best battle rifles in history.

    Correct me if I'm wrong...

    The #4 is the older Mk1 that got refurbished with new sights and 1 or 2 other tricks. I think I'm right on that.

    In WWI, it was decided that the U.S. went to war with a great target rifle, the Germans went to battle with a great hunting rifle, and the Brits went to battle with a great battle rifle. They could rip off 10 aimed shots far quicker than the enemy, thanks to that slick Enfield bolt.

    Tons of the Lee Enfields were sold as surplus in the 50's and 60's and we Americans slurped them up. Many have been sporterized, some left original. They're everywhere.
