National forest question

I hunt on private and if I go deeper on the ridge I run into national forest. Now down a ridge I can walk on the private and national forest run against each other. My question is about the red paint dot on the trees. Which side is government. Is the dot painted on the side of the tree that is government or is it behind it. It's confusing to me because I always thought the put it on the side that if your looking at the red dot on the tree then behind that tree was government. But I ran into a spot with a dot on the tree I was facing and beside it was a sign with its back to me and it said national forest behind this sign. Thanks for any help.

I’ve seen yellow paint, blue paint and red paint on trees. Also seen signs straddling the line. It’s definitely confusing. My guess is in some places I’ve been the boundary has moved as more land was acquired. Regardless I use several apps to figure out where I’m at.

I have found using onx maps, basemaps, or go-hunt is way easier and more accurate than looking for trees with paint on them. I personally like onxmaps the best.

I’ve noticed red paint too and was hoping they were planning on cutting but being National Forest, didn’t get my hopes up.

Red paint is usually on the outside of National Forest property line here. Yellow is WMA but a lot of times they put rings around them in yellow.

Nearest I can tell both are open to hunting here. What gets confusing is the smatterings of private land. They have no paint bordering them but a few have very uninviting signs.

Yes you can hunt on it here as well. I just like to put out corn or hang stands and you can't on national forest here. That's my main concern.

When they make a national forest they have a footprint (boundaries) of the area that they are trying to buy up the private land within that area. There can be private land inside that footprint but it’s not considered part of the NF. The NF is public land owned by the people administered by the the government entity.
