Don't arrive on Friday afternoon; traffic out theAss.
You might check out that Moonshine Distillery; I find it interesting. About everything else is geared to the female of the species and how to fleece the tourist.

Red Rooster pancake house is also a must IMO. Got breakfast at the "word famous" Apple Barn, never do that again. Reminded me of our grade school cafeteria food back in the day.

As far as attractions, the Ripleys Aquarium is pretty cool and I'll second Cades Cove. We have a time share and Sevierville is close and doesn't take a lot of our points so the Wifey drags me down there several weekends a year to get away for a couple days. She likes it but to me the whole place is just tourist trap.

Trout fishing. A guy can fish right in downtown Gatlinburg. Or go up the road and fish in the mountains.

A very good assessment of the place. I enjoy the scenery that the Smokies has to offer, but usually drive right straight thru Gatlinburg. It's one of the biggest tourist traps on the planet.

I like Dollywood. There are always excellent young musicians and it has a couple of things that most other parks don't have - trees and shade.

I also like Cades Cove and getting up early to watch the sun come up at the top of the hill in the Smokys. (Newfound Gap? I can't remember the name.)

There are a few good places to eat, but they are all way overpriced.

The views from clingmans dome are hard to beat.
There are 2 apple barns. One is the apple barn grill. I would avoid it. The apple barn restaurant that takes up the whole block is delicious and has huge portions. I will say that you are highly unlikely to get a waiter or waitress that speaks English as their first language. Seems like a bunch of Bosnians are imported to work in all the restaurants. I don't care for all of the commercialism particularly in pigeon forge but really enjoy exploring the park. If you enjoy hiking and are in decent shape, the park is full of great opportunities.

If you enjoy traffic jams than you are headed to the right place. Never again.

When we go we avoid Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg......head right into the mountains, do Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome. We've hiked most of the trails that have waterfalls, some are not too bad. We did Mt LeConte down and up in one day......that was a little on the rougher side. LOL. There is a resturant on the artist loop that is very good. Its a chic joint, put it will score you some points with the wife. Its called the Wild Plum Tea Room or something like that. Enjoy the mountains they are beautiful Oh yeah and you can hike some of the Appalachian Trail.

The Elk Viewing area in the other end of the park is great ( Cataloochee ) NOT in Gatlinburg though.

That was going to be my suggestion. Pick a creek and start hiking up it.
