Lots of animals utilize autumn olive berries, but when they get thick they are horrible. And I read somewhere they are terrible for allergies. Saying their pollen will carry for miles.
I’ve seen 5 or 6 hens fly into AO bushes and eat the berries. They do have some benefit to wildlife but they have a lot of downside as well.

Still in the kitchen Ky
I just read 2 articles in Ky Afield (fall 2022 edition) that touched on their plans to reclaim the mine areas for elk, the department is seeking a grant from the Rocky Mountain elk foundation for aerial spraying to destroy the Olive and sericea plants, and the other article states KDFW and Ky division of forestry are making plans to burn 2k acres per year of open lands to promote grassland habitat.

2K per year? At that rate, it should only take a couple thousand years to get the job done!

Lol, dang ya'll got plenty of beef to go with that salt dont ya?
Just reporting what I read. I'd say they probably can't set half the state on fire all at once RL but that's just me.
No offense meant towards you or your post at all, I've just been watching and comparing for many years. Sometimes I just want to say Damn guys, can you really not do any better?

Neighbors cows keep coming over I’ll find out!!!
Right!? Fortunately my neighbor hung it up. He was constantly having to call his boy (who is 24 and too busy to be dealing with dad’s cattle problems) to deal with them and fencing. I typically took care of getting a loose calf back in or fixing a fence break, but it really was getting old. If they had a little more weight and fat on them i would have considered taking them up on slaughtering one myself.

Shoot I’ll grind the whole thing if I have too.

Yeah, no offense to you sir. Burning 2K acres at a time won’t solve much when you consider the extent of the problem. Just sayin’.

I was told, they told the grouse assoc, that it was great grouse habitat. They disagreed but F&W put it in anyhow. I haven't seen anything eat the berries. On my place I put the tractor bucket in the base of the bush and angle down and shove and lift. They don't come back or haven't so far. Guy who owned this place before me was told by F&W to put in Catawba bush/trees. Again another good for nothing plant that is a pain in the ass. It grows angling into any open road you have and you have to cut it out every year. Or it will grow the road shut. State could have great habitat on those mine grounds if they shut down all the UTV riding on em and go in there and eradicate the olive and the lespedeza and put in warm season grasses and switchgrass and some productive mast trees and pine forest.
At one time, autumn olive was recommended as a wildlife enhancement planting for mine lands...same as the serica lespedeza. That was before they figured out how invasion they were. Now both are forbidden, but too late.
I have a feeling autumn olive and serica lespedeza were way down the list as far as recommendations go until their budget (what they were willing to spend) was considered. Decision making has been extremely short sighted.
