I heard a story about KDFWR hiring someone to clear out the horses on a property and it resulted in 17 elk being shot and piled up. Not sure about the accuracy of that story but… sounds about right.

Little of both honestly. They are some that are surely feral by this point but also massive herds that people “tend” but they literally can go wherever they want. Most have no idea how many or where they are at any given time. But they sure bitch when one ends up dead. Even though 3 herds by 3 different people are there.

The land owners should have put it in contract ,to survey and fence the land ,when it goes back to the land owner.Theres people that owns land that don’t have a clue ,where the lines are ,with no fences people think its free range,so everybody uses it.They say it’s worse now than it use to be,I talked to one person who said they ,used their cemetery to herd a bunch of horses ,and cattle to try sort them out ,destroyed it ,knocked grave stones over ,tore fence up .

Some of the cattle are “owned” but just wonder and some aren’t actually owned by anyone. This is a big problem that needs addressing. Be a good way to earn some fun money by rounding a bunch up and selling them.

It’s just a symptom of the bigger problem which is most folks don’t give $.02 about landowner rights, private property, etc.

They need those young fellers that ride mules on that YouTube channel to round up all those strays. They built a mule hauler out of an old school bus.

I think the issue is that the land owner is perfectly fine with allowing cattle and horses to graze the property but hunters object to it because it affects their perceived right to hunt property that is not theirs.

At one time, autumn olive was recommended as a wildlife enhancement planting for mine lands...same as the serica lespedeza. That was before they figured out how invasion they were. Now both are forbidden, but too late.
I was told, they told the grouse assoc, that it was great grouse habitat. They disagreed but F&W put it in anyhow. I haven't seen anything eat the berries. On my place I put the tractor bucket in the base of the bush and angle down and shove and lift. They don't come back or haven't so far. Guy who owned this place before me was told by F&W to put in Catawba bush/trees. Again another good for nothing plant that is a pain in the ass. It grows angling into any open road you have and you have to cut it out every year. Or it will grow the road shut. State could have great habitat on those mine grounds if they shut down all the UTV riding on em and go in there and eradicate the olive and the lespedeza and put in warm season grasses and switchgrass and some productive mast trees and pine forest.

Lots of animals utilize autumn olive berries, but when they get thick they are horrible. And I read somewhere they are terrible for allergies. Saying their pollen will carry for miles.
