Had mallard hen that would do that, everyday an Easter Egg Hunt! Then she found a hollow crotch about three feet off the ground and hopped up there to lay.

Yes but i got one or two that doesn’t want to listen. If I didn’t let them out so early wouldn’t be a problem.

We had one silkie we let set and hatch a couple eggs per year. Unfortunately she passed this past fall, she was 7 yrs old. Her sis passed about 2 months later. We have 2 of 11 originals still, they don't lay any more but she can't part with em! :( Gonna hatch some out this year to add a few to the flock. We have 12 hens and a rooster.

Do you need to put them in a heated area when they hatch or does the hen take care of everything?

I’ll probably let one set when it gets warmer.

I wish a few of those would go missing and wind up in my fridge.

  10. My last hen died in the fall. I started off with 11 hens and one roo and within 4 years they were all dead, most by hawks or some other varmint but a few just killed over dead a couple right off the roost. I like the fresh eggs but I spent a lot of money feeding them hens and Kroger sells a brand of eggs for $5.99 or less on sale that are right there with fresh hen house eggs. They’re so good with mostly large and the occasional xl brown eggs and a big bright orange yolk that I just might never get anymore layers to have to buy feed for. Plus I hardly eat a dozen eggs a week anymore.

I got this dozen last night on sale for $5.49. I know that sounds outrageous for a dozen eggs but like Purnell’s Old Folks Country Sausage, it’s good! They even have a bird of the month lmao. Can you spot the one XXL?
