I've never done any, but hoping to buy one after my second knee surgery heals up come late spring. I was wondering if it was legal to search for stuff in the Nat'l Forest? I know some spots lakeside that were old homesteads and was wondering about my wandering. Ha
I used to do a little prospecting for gold with my metal detector down in Georgia in the Chattahoochee National Forest but they started requiring permits and put limits on the areas you could hunt so I quit going but that was years ago so I'm not sure what the situation is now. Probably just depends on which National Forest you choose. Here's a little guidance for the Forests: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3840675.pdf If I remember correctly, all National PARKS are off limits to metal detectorists.
I used to have one but never found time to use it. I finally wizened up enough to stop wearing any fine jewelry while riding surf, after having lost enough while doing so and always wondered which guy scanning the beach early morning and/or late afternoon potentially scored with it. That sand and saltwater would greatly benefit your healing.
I’ve been metal detecting for years it is not legal to metal detect in Daniel Boone national Forest or any other national forest for that matter.
May be ... but ... somebody needs to tell whoever's writing these regulations: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5261774.pdf
