They knocked us back to 2 deer total in zone 4 after Blue tongue hit in 17’.. still that way, will be for several more seasons I’d guess.
I plan to hunt clay farm in late MZ in hopes of using my extra tags this year.

TarHunt is King in the slug gun world, but they are spendy. My H&R Ultra Slug prints better than my Savage 212, but they both do really well with the factory ammo currently available.

I’d rather have an earn a buck program. Too many does and no one seems to want to kill them anymore. I see 10 does to every buck.
That’s odd. I haven’t seen but one mature doe all season. 2 diff county’s. All been little yearling does. My wife killed a big ole doe but I haven’t. Just been yearlin does.

H&R ultra is the diamond of slug guns for me, when we are talking production guns. They will flat out shoot. That’s why they have 3x in price since New England went under..

Honestly depends on the area. On the Edmonson Co farm, I didn’t see but 4 total deer in 10 sits. On the Metcalfe Co farm, it’s nothing to see 5-6 deer in one sit. Might be all buck, all does, or mixture of both. The Hart Co farm typically see 5-10 does to every buck.

Target crown on a thin walled barrel? How much ft/lbs energy at 200+? What distance do you sight it in and how much drop at 200-200+?
A lot of the single shot slug guns (like the H&R) use oversized barrels...a 12 gauge blank bored to a rifled 20 gauge...this wall thickness provides adequate space to target crown the barrel...these single shot rifled slug guns are already inherently accurate and by cutting the barrel back to 18 1/2" should (theoretically) improve rigidity and definitely portability...the 12 gauge versions use a 10 gauge barrel blank...does make them a bit heavy -- 9 lbs or so for a single shot shotgun but that helps tame recoil pretty well...

The SSTs I run through my 12 gauge are 300 grain with a muzzle velocity of just over 2000 ft/s...muzzle energy is easily in the mid-bore magnum class...not entirely sure how much energy is impacted at 200 yards but the last buck I hit with that load at 200 yards was quartering hard away from me...the shot was slightly off and ended up blasting through the left hip joint before traversing the entire length of the body, mushrooming nicely before blowing a golf ball sized hole out just in front of the right shoulder...buck flipped tail over head and never moved...I was impressed anyway...

Sight in is zero at 100 yards (also at about 21 yards)...there is a fair amount of drop at 150 and 200 yards (still not as much as you would think when using the SSTs) and the sluggun BDC reticle does a great job with holdover...

I would also love to find a Remington 870 Compact Combo (synthetic stock) in 20 gauge to set up for both deer and turkey...

I have one of the original Browning A-bolt slug guns with rifled barrel. Never killed a deer with it, but when I played with it yrs ago it was pretty accurate at 100. Never shot it past that. Put it's scope on something else and it's been a safe queen for 15-20 yrs.
