Anyone have any experience with finishing knotty pine ceilings? I've spent the most part of the winter installing it on my living room and I'm just about ready to start staining and sealing. I was originally thinking about just leaving it natural and applying a clear poly coating, but now I'm leaning toward darkening it a little bit...Anyone have any suggestions on what type of stain/shade to use? Pictures?

It's to late for the best advise. "Which is to finish it before you put it up".

Finishing it before you installed it would have been the best, now that it is installed I would rent an airless sprayer, and tape off the walls and floor and spray it.

If you stain it, it will continue to darken with age.

We just finished one and used Lenmar satin poly. Applied w a Good wide brush. It will look like a honey color after three coats, similar to a gym floor. We did one last year too and both looked great. Sand lightly between coats. You may be able to darken or tint the poly w a little stain and do one coat.

Here is one that we finished on the lake last summer. I always like to do the clear poly to help brighten the room. We always put two coats on before install then sand and apply final coat after intall.

  7. Minwax Polycrylic works very good and is easy to apply.

This is what my wood supplier recommended.
