I have always been intrigued by those who consistently are able hunt from dark to dark. On the very few occasions I have attempted it ,it feels like torture. I have no doubt that the tactic is a sound one and that many deer are killed by people who can sit all day.
Here is the question. What do you DO? Do you focus on deer all day? Play on your phone? Pray, eat , listen to music? How do you pass the time on all day sits.
I am asking because I am probably going to Alberta this year and will have to sit all day for however long it takes. Please advise.

I have always been able to do all day sits. The major factors for me are a comfortable seat and staying warm. I take a few snacks and water. I occasionally sneak a peek at kyhunting throughout the day. I have found that looking at your phone to much will cause you to loose focus completely on the woods around you. I have killed several good bucks mid day, while others are eating lunch at the truck. Confidence that it will pay off keeps me in the tree.

I did it in my younger years but can't sit that long now. Maybe in a bigger enclosed blind were I can flex my knees so they don't ache. I used to pack a lunch and a few snacks, extra can of dip. Young guy we took to Kansas last fall did an all day sit killed his buck about 330pm. Had he walked in at 3 he my have busted that buck out.

Haven’t done it in a couple years. Take food and check the forum. Honestly, where I hunt, unless you’re talking late gun or late ML it’s about a waste. I’d probably love it in Alberta if I can stay warm. The idea of seeing a bear or wolf or one of those giants stepping out would probably keep me excited all day.

I don’t sit all day but I’ve sat for 6 hours or so. That’s in a box blind with heat, food and water. I’ll scroll my phone, text with buddies who are hunting. I’ve been known to take a nap or two. The best naps I’ve ever had are when I’ve been hunting.

I will say this, can’t speak for Alberta, but I 100% think a lot of people leave the woods too early when hunting mornings. Even in warmer early season weather, we like to sit in until 10 - 11. I know people who won’t sit past 9am. Heck even if I ain’t seeing much, I’m not going through all that trouble in the morning getting ready and setting up for 2 hours. LOL. Maybe if all I was doing is walking behind my house but we have to commute. Anything less than 3-4 hours is seems like we preparing then heading home bit more than we get set up.

When I'm hunting a spot by my self I hunt all day. I pack a lunch and empty Gatorade bottles to pee in. I will sit in a pop up or 4x4 box blind. I try to stay off my phone or at least stop playing with it till it's at 30% just in case I need to make an emergency phone call. Squirrels usually keep me occupied most of the day. Most of my wall hangers have be taken around 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

I have one of those small portable phone chargers I charge up and keep in top of my backpack, especially when it’s cold out.

I do all day sits most of the time. Im always looking for movement
in the woods.Dont see as much movement in the midday times, but have
seen some big ones during the rut.I watch tree rats, birds and just
anything.During slow times I close my eyes for a rest for a few minutes.
Snack on candies and just relax. My hunting place is a 50 mile round trip.
So when I go to hunt,I hunt all day....

A dozen yrs in Alberta, sitting 10 hrs/day, nothing but looking for deer, staying focused. Had several 60 hr sits. You may only get one chance at a big one, best be paying attention. I predominantly hunted cut lines, about 7 yds wide. Deer crosses in just a few steps, look down you miss it. At 400 yds, deer takes up most of the cutline. You can only hope it stops to give you a decent look.
And these are open tripod stands in, what can be, the brutal elements.

I usually hunt all day. I might move stands but I’m usually sitting all day. I take a thermos with coffee and plenty of snacks and water. I’ll dress warm because you can always take a layer off versus put one on. I spend most of my time glassing, timing calls, and just sitting and listening. I look at my phone for short periods when it’s slow. It seems like every time I take my phone out a deer comes through. If it’s slow I’ve also got a pocket bible I thumb through.

Six years ago I learned how to tie Paracord bracelets sitting in my large box blind on a hillside behind my house. The blind sits on top of a cleared field and over looks the creek 75 yards below it.
