Got my non-resident application for Illinois. Wow, they are really trying to squeeze out the non-residents this year. There are no second season permits availiable in most of the counties. And, I can't see that there's been any increase in full season tags to offset that.

Something tells me we're not treating thme the same way here.

Yeah, I had that experience last year. After buying a <b>Campbell Illinois whitetail resources</b> hunt at a 2002 DU dinner two years ago-$350. I talked to the campbell guys 3 times planning and confirming the hunt and dates for october 2003, got all psyched up to arrow a pike county monster. One week before the trip the guy asked if I had my NR license and tags. Needless to say, the trip was canceled, CIWR didnt take me hunting, although they offered to take me to kentucky-Gee thanks!!! I live there!!!
...might have brought that up with me before then, genius-or maybe I was supposed to know that their guide service left licensing up to the hunter when it's a donated hunt that they apparently dont really want to provide. I didnt fault DU, I would have donated at least that much anyway. I think the Louisville DU Committee continues to accept their schtick but I wish they would hold them to a certain standard in return for CIWR using DU for free publicity and making such a half hearted effort to fulfill their donation.
Just a headsup for DU committeemen and potential silent auction buyers.

Not all Illinois licenses are hard to get. Archery licenses go on sale ona pre-published date each year amd they normally sell out in 3-5 days. This year, they are selling 3,000 more than last year for a total of 15,000. Gun tags are by drawing, as they are for residents. You can almost always get one of them. The first season tag is anywhere from 45% to 70% draw odds. That's better than most western states on their tags. For the second season and the ML season, it's mostly 100%.

Last year, in the county we have the club in, hey had ML tags left over after the draw. If you took one of those, you could also hunt the 2nd shotgun season with your ML. Over all, it's a decent chance of getting to hunt a true trophy deer state.

I've got 4 opening left if anyone needs a spot on a very nice tract located just a few minutes from Evansville, Ind. Super great deer hunting and waterfowl. Email me for details.

BTW-- I make a point in knowing the regs. in states that I hunt in. It's a good way to avoid trouble. Anyone is wise to do the same. If that makes me a "know it all", then so be it. But doing your homework before you go is a very important fact in being successful when hunting far away places for a short time. And it's absolutely crazy not to know the regs when your at home.

Okay - my virgin ears have had enough[:0]. Where are the moderators? Oh ---- You are a moderator[:I][:I]. Just messing with you. I've felt like that many times on these forums. Have fun.

BTW - as I've said before the best way to solve the IL "problem" would be about a three year non-resident boycott. Let those 1000 dollar a day operations rape their residents for a change.

I'm only a moderator in the Cyberhunter's threads.

As for the boycott, what would that solve? People aren't "forced" to pay those prices. They do it by choice. When 12,000 tags sell out in 3 days of telephone sales, then they have something to offer. I didn't understand it either until I got the property that we have there. It's very good deer hunting, and better than most people will ever experience. I don't see the license prices as being too far out of line based on what hunting out west costs. No, I wouldn't pay $1000 per day to hunt whitetails, But $1000 per year is not too bad for the quality that it provides.

An archery license might have been easy to get-if I had known. It might have also be easy for the people at the guide service to advise me of that information...Unless they didnt really want to provide the hunt. [;)]

No doubt that the hunting there is worth every penny. I've got a great spot here but we just have alot more quality bucks on our place in Illinois. My frustration is that the land I hunt has been in my family for over 100 years but, due to the fact that I am not yet the record owner of 40 acres, I have to put in for non-resident tags. We get 4 landowner tags but that doesn't help me much if I get caught on the property with no non-resident permit.

To my knowldege, this is the first year that there have been no second season firearm tags available for White or Edwards Counties.

Creekhunter,
I went to the Illinois DNR site to look at the permits that are left after the first draw. It shows permits for the full season, but doesn't show hardly anything for the first and second season. Do you know what that means?

Thanks,
SM

The full season tags will allow you to hunt first or second season. I don't ever recall them issuing just a first season tag so I don't know why they have that category listed. Like I said above, the big change in my mind is the fact that there are no second season tags available in most counties. That's a major shift because I don't think there's been a proportionate increase in full season tags made available. I really think this is their way of bumping off the non-residents they can't deter by raising permit fees. They jacked a single either sex permit to over $200.00 hoping that would curb out of state interest. I guess that move hasn't had the effect they were looking for.

I'll be in my stand on opening morning one way or the other I can tell you that.

Creekhunter,

Thanks for the clarification. I'll be calling this Saturday hoping to get an archery permit. There's alot of hassle for Non-residents, but if you can luck up on one of those big boys, it's worth all of the trouble. Hope you get a big one this year. Good Luck..

First season tags are for a few limited-entry areas. There are not many that fit that category.

I'm surprised that there are so few second season tags remaining. In years past there have been lots of tags available, even for folks who wait until late or want a second or third tag.

I agree with someone earlier who said a NR has about a 25-65% chance of drawing a full-season tag.(Depending on county chosen) Second season and muzzleloader tags have been a given for about anyone who wanted one.

Good luck to all who call or draw!
