hunting strategy

I changed my set-up one time after 7 sets of seeing nothing. I knew better but did it any way. Of course the only deer Ive seen before or since came that way, offering me no shot from my changed position.
I messed up and if you hunt in a place like I often do you cant afford mistakes. If you get a chance once every 10-12 days you have to make them count..

I've got a shooting house on the field behind me, lol. No ridges. I saw a bunch of deer the last two years, but no shooters.

I was only going to shoot a buck this year since I have a beef and soon a hog in the freezer. I only hunted the better weather days and the biggest buck I saw had antlers that I didn't see till I looked through the binoculars, lol. For me any buck that wasn't a baby would of been in freezer.
I am going to get me a shooting house built for next year. I hate freezing my ass off anymore.
Sounds like you got a decent spot if you're looking for a really nice deer. There's only been 1 really decent deer killed around me in the last 4 or 5 years and that was just across the road from me.

That was kind of vague. I meant, I took a (1) beer during deer season, twice this year. I take deer and turkey hunting seriously.

Let's play a game. The attachment is the piece of land with the creek bottom. The creek bottom is at the bottom. It is roughly 130 yards from field corner to field corner at the bottom. It's about 250 yards from shooting house to the right corner. There is a rougly 50' very steep hill, basically bluff in places, going from field to the creek bottom. Sitting near the top of the hill is like being in a very high stand. I've hunted both corners this year, marked by green and white marks. I've seen deer nearly every sit. The big yellow mark is the shooting house. There are two very deep ravines between the shooting house and the property line. I have killed my last two bucks in the open field, chasing does. The last two years, I've only hunted the house twice each year, and saw no chasing. I saw some chasing the opening few days of gun season by smaller bucks, and rattled in a 120ish 8, and a 110ish 9. But with the number of hours I spent, I would think a shooter would have been seen. Again, I don't have many shooters, and my standard isn't that high because you can't kill what you don't have. I do know that big ass buck came through the creek 3 years ago at 8:30 in the morning, because I had his pic on camera. Unfortunately, I was on a different farm chasing a ghost. Thoughts? Where would you hunt? All the red marks are just to protect the innocent.

There is a garage size flat in that corner. I had a stand there three years ago. Very steep drop off to bottom with two trails going to back trim Any deer that comes through there, I can see from green dot, and have a better shot. I’ll try to get a topo map of it too.

What’s in that field on the neighbors just to your right? Food source?
Not saying hunt the property line but looks like it could be solid. The inside corner of that field off it on your side. You would think there would be movement in there. I’d dive in there as opposed to the field edges.

Personally I'd look at a topo map and have a stand on a good draw, saddle, pinch point whatever you wanna call it in that woods. Assuming it isn't just "flat". Some people have luck in big open fields but I've always prefered small secluded fields and/or covered travel routes much over the wide open.

hay, sometimes corn. My wife's cousins hunt it some. They have a shooting house, and they can't shoot for shit. I'm probably gonna get a dozer to clear that power line out and put a short box blind on it for next year.

Personally I'd look at a topo map and have a stand on a good draw, saddle, pinch point whatever you wanna call it in that woods. Assuming it isn't just "flat". Some people have luck in big open fields but I've always prefered small secluded fields and/or covered travel routes much over the wide open.

I've always tried to stay out of it as much as possible. They bed on those ridges, depending on the wind direction. I have been considering changing that philosophy though.

The orange lines are the deep ravines I mentioned. Probably 150' deep or more, getting deeper as they near the creek. The yellow line below that field on right is pretty much a vertical bluff. My best spot used to be across that road where that woods comes near the road. Built a shooting house in there. It was a great spot. They built a 6000 sq foot house and two teenage boys moved in. They are constantly outside shooting, riding 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. Two dogs that run loose. Don't see near as many deer. Still good bucks cruise through, but few and far between.
