Just wondering how the experts wax there traps ( I have a small pot that I have melted 5 pounds of wax and I dip 1 trap at a time . All wax no water????
All wax and no water is correct in my oppinion. I waxed over thirty the other night in a couple hours. I wax mine one at a time also. If ya get the temp right it’s a pretty speedy process. Doesn’t take long. I have used FMJ and I prefer wax . I love my traps waxed. Prolly just in my head but that’s what I like.
I saw a video one time of a guy using a fry daddy or similar to wax traps. He had one with temp control etc. I've thought about finding one at a yard sale and giving it a try. Trick is to let the trap get to the same temp as the wax b4 taking it out?
Another trapper I know uses 1 gal water and 1 pound of wax. Boils water / wax says wax floats on top of water . Has anybody tried this.
I’m not saying it won’t work as Iv never tried it but a good boil to clean then a dip in the wax pot is hard to beat.
No wax!! I never use it ever just the way I do it if you catch a animal in a trap that's waxed they chew leave smell even little blood or hair, .. not saying it's wrong just that there is other ways,. .my self I paint traps with Rust-Oleum flat black In mid summer and use them all season a dirty trap needs nothing but drop in bucket of water till next day
I'm going to try the paint ,I got 2 traps set aside now paint and let dry. I think it will take a while for the smell to completely leave . Will use next year.
I'm not saying anyone is wrong for waxing.. many top trappers do, but I read about a top trapper painting traps and it's the only way for me after first year all mine went to the paint pole
Nope used traps gets presher washer and hung to dry that after season is done,. If there's wax on them it'll take boiling to get it off. New traps go's same way but after I throw them in a barrel of rain water with some rusty metal for a week to get that light rust then laid out to dry then paint and hang
I tried the full metal jacket dip last year, it resulted in my traps starting to get dug up. Did it mid season, didn’t have a trap dug up till dipped them, then multiples found dug up. I say paint pre season and let air out.
Dyed but no wax here. Having said that, my trapping consists of an occasional really dumb coyote, but I'm really good at coons, possums, skunks and other non-targets in my coyote sets!
I went away from wax. FMJ here. I’ve done both when I did wax. Pure wax and I’ve floated wax on top of water.
Thats how I wax my traps with straight wax in it. Has worked well for me. Been thinking about painting a few traps next year to give it a try and see how I like it over dyeing and waxing them.
