Got to thinking a bit more about this post . I'm retired can hunt whenever I want , there is no reason ( for me) to hunt when it's miserable hot and buggy. The exception would be next card pull I have a DAYLIGHT monster. Another reason not to hunt most of the deer coolers within 30 miles of me don't open till gun or at least till temps cool off..
I have never understood why a state where deer hunting is so popular has so few processors. I am not set up to do my own . I really want build a small cooler and cutting room.

Likely first weekend only for me since I've taken about every critter under the sun that I've hunted EXCEPT a big 'un in velvet. After first weekend I'll stock my freezer with fish for the winter, enjoy a couple of dove shoots, work with pup, and before you know it the cool morning of October will be upon us.

I’ve realized that it’s all dependent on where you live in regards to processors. Where I grew up in northern KY, our favorite processor (Fair’s) was usually open in the mornings on Saturdays and there were one or 2 other processors that would open their cooler for you whenever you called on the weekends. All of which were within 30 minutes of our house.

Now I live in Mercer Co and have to drive over an hour to get to a processor with an open cooler during weekends in bow season. Both C and J Processing and Summit Meats have 24 hr drop off coolers open during the season.

I believe a man could make a little coin opening a deer cooler in an under served area like Waco KY, lol

    Open from Sept till January.
    Hmmmmmm.

Only problem with that is you better not like to hunt if you open one.

Depends. Local guy up here has a 24 hour cooler plus taxidermy shop, and is an avid hunter himself. He just makes time to go hunting, and knows rifle season, he’ll be busy.

He’s not 100% one man show either. His son helps him, and I believe he has others help during rifle season.

The processor I always used to go to said the money they charge for deer is barely worth it compared to processing beef and hogs. Somebody make me an offer I might process it for you lol

Me and my buddy just finished putting in a walk in cooler in his shop. 12x12 10 foot tall. He is talking about cutting up Deer. I told him better kill out quick be covered up. And if I kill out I will help till Duck season opens.

The only time I’ll hunt in the morning in September is if a cold front passes overnight. That first cold snap of the fall seems to get them up and moving in daylight a little longer.

I have tried to use Arvins in Irvine , but he is about as dependable as rain in the desert, he never answerscthe phone and if you ride by he is usually closed, the one time I did get a hold of him he seemed disinterested in opening till gun season.

Never had any experience with him. We always took our to Halseys in Wolfe county cause it was closest to where we hunted. We get our beef done there too. Most of the hunters I've talked to since moving to estill county take theirs to a place in Berea.
