If you are moving from New York I wold first ask what type on waterfowl hunting you are accustomed to, puddle ducks, divers, Canada's, snows, brant, costal sea ducks in the New England area? Either way you need to plan on burning a countless number tanks of fuel to go somewhere else to hunt birds. Your closest viable option may be the Ohio river but I would recommend a large boat. You asked for honest answers and this is as honest as you will find on this site or any other in existence. You may be able to find a few woodies in the September season and an occasional mallard on a farm pond or creek but nothing in abundance or dependable numbers. Allow me to be one of the first to welcome you to Kentucky.

You”ll be hunting other critters for sure.
Hunt with good friends or family. Spike that coffee and take some binoculars to watch other wildlife. Prepare for lots of conversation because the action will be slow. Heck, we even take fishing poles some days! Just my experience. Still 100 percent better than sitting in the house.

You can probably find some areas to “jump shoot” some ducks. That’s pretty much what I’ve been relegated to. Tons of miles walked/driven and a few critters a season.

We here in Eastern Ky live right between the Atlantic flyway and the Mississippi flyway. You may be able to find some resident geese around the Big Sandy River. But over all it’s tough going for us waterfowl hunters here. Welcome to Ky 😊

I live in Floyd, never picked up on waterfowl cause there is none to hunt. Resident Canadas are here and a few get smoked on the lake wma’s every year. A few mallards that are pretty much residents as well. I have kicked up mallards and woodies on the creeks smallmouth fishing but very few and far between.

I thought i found a “honey hole” on some mine ponds near jackson (well over a hundred resident birds) I hunted the big ponds they were hitting twice, they disappeared. Hunted a few other ponds they had spread out to and by my third try on them they vacated that 2k acres property completely. I went to the next mine south of there and found them (or potentially another group) but couldn’t hunt that strip job as a worker told me i can deer or rabbit hunt but no waterfowl.
Fun for me but i dont think anyone that’s use to killing birds would enjoy it at all lol.
I know here in EKy if they get a really good storm north of us that freezes stuff up and dumps snow, and we don't get the freeze and snow too then some of the WMA lakes may get a pop of mallards and gaddies and some other puddlers for a short time. I've had it happen a few times and been able to take advantage of it but it's few and far between. Good Luck! You should be able to find a couple grouse and bears and deer and a few turks down that way too.
